For over a year now I have been receiving service calls from Verizon customers who have dialing a Verizon service number. (I am not a Verizon customer).
Initially I would get a call once a month or so with the caller asking about their Verizon service. I would politely tell them they had the wrong number and to hang up and dial again. I have never received a call back from the same person. Over the past few months I have been receiving these calls with increasing frequency. I now get calls from Verizon customers, who are trying to reach Verizon customer service, multiple times a week and often multiple times a day. Each time I inform them they have dialed the wrong number and hang up (almost all of the callers fail to hear my greeting, which in no way should sound like they are talking to Verizon customer service and proceed to explain their service problems). I even often have voice-mails from customers leaving me their information.
Often the customers are extremely irritated that they have reached the wrong number. Only one did not hang up immediately and I asked her what number she dialed, it was not even in the same area code as my number. Initially, when I was receiving these calls infrequently, I thought it was strange but didn't think the problem needed to be addressed. But, now that the calls have become much, much more frequent not only is it wasting my time but I am sure it is extremely frustrating for these customers who are being routed to the wrong number.
I am unsure what the solution to this problem is, but if there is anything that can be done to stop these call from being routed to my number It would be appreciated both by me and I am sure to the Verizon customers as well.
