Transferring phone numbers from contract to prepaid service

My wife and I are currently on a contract plan (though we have completed the contract period) and wish to switch to prepaid plans.  Are we able to transfer our current contract phone numbers to the prepaid plans (All within Verizon.)?  If so then how?  Can you refer us to a web location that could provide the required methodology?
