You should be able to just go into your My Verizon account and activate the discount.

Prompts caused me to sign up for community and email but never allowed me to sign up for discount

You didn't sign into your My Verizon account. You do have one of those don;t you? That's the one where you can see and pay your bill online.

I do have an account, that's how I got to post this question. Still I don't see where to "apply discount ".
