Why does my phone automatically delete my emails, even before I've had a chance to read them?

I've only had my Galaxy S4 for 2 months, and I've gotten so annoyed because I will get a notification that I have x number (e.g., 12) of emails in my in box and then, when I open my email.....I may have only one or two. And....if I DO get a chance to read my emails, then the next time I check it all of my messages will have completely disappeared. What the heck is going on here, and can anyone help me figure out how to fix this problem?

Sorry to just now be getting back to you, but with Thanksgiving and my granddaughter's wedding yesterday, I've been too busy and stressed to worry about my phone again until now.

Yes, I used the default email application, and the email provider is Cox Communications. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated. Also I was wondering if I should change to IMAP (from POP3)....perhaps that would help the problem? Don't know, as I don't know anyone else who uses IMAP. Your help, again, would be appreciated.

Try deleting and resinstalling your email account. I have found this works when the email starts acting up.
