How to switch phone number from old contract phone to new prepaid phone?

We have a basic phone contract plan that just ended. We recently purchased a prepaid verizon smart phone and set up a separate account for it. We now would like to move our phone number from our contract phone to our new prepaid phone. How? I have been on the phone with customer service  all afternoon and no one seems to understand what I want to accomplish. This should not be that complicated. Please someone tell me how to move our phone number so I don't have to change our phone number.

I understand that when you activate the phone it asks you if you want to use an existing number or get a new number.
