Why won't texts from others come through when my data is turned off?

It has gotten to the point where I automatically send all text messages as iMessages and text messages if given the option to do both. Hopefully my texts are going through most of the time, or my phone lets me know when they haven't... but often I am not gettting texts from others when my data is turned off (data is turned off to not run up data usage, but that's a whole other discussion)...

are they group or mms messages? those need cell data from vzw but they don't count against your monthly allotment

Look no further help is here! Text messaging is my main means of communication so I completely understand how frustrating it can be when it's not working properly.

You should still be able to send standard text message with cellular data turned off. Is the issue with picture messages or group text? Are you able to send a text message while data is turned off? Which iPhone do you have?

If you're sending a text message to another iPhone it will go out over iMessage.

Go to Settings > Messages and make sure "Send as SMS" is turned on. Otherwise you will need to be connected to WiFi. Thats because iMessage uses regular data rather than phone/cellular to send messages.

Or just turn off iMessage altogether and all messages will be sent as SMS. Except those pesky group and picture/video messages.

SMS was turned off- I will remind everyone in my family to turn theirs on

as well so hopefully we won't have missed messages from this point on.
