had iphone 6 for 3 months. no voice mail, *86 won't connect

I upgraded to an iphone 6 from an iphone 4 back in May. Since then I have not had any voice mail. I had it before. I went into my account and updated the voicemail password, but when I dial *86 I get "cannot complete this call" which is the same message someone gets when they call me and I don't answer.

Hi there, tysontyson. Sorry for the trouble with voicemail. Rather than dial in to a voicemail service, your iPhone 6 offers Visual Voicemail, which allows you to see a list of messages and choose the one you want to review. In order to listen to a voicemail message, tap Voicemail (an icon in your Menu). Your message should be displayed in a list. Select anyone you like to listen or delete.
