why do I get invalid sim on my iPad?

So one of the applications running on the iPad, began getting the following error: Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1020 "A data connection is not currently allowed.". After inspecting the device, I noticed that it said "Invalid Sim" on the top left of the device status bar. After Resetting the Network Settings, the issue resolved itself, but I still wonder what caused the issue? Will it happen again?

It might be a bad SIM card, which you can replace for free by calling Verizon, visiting a corporate store, ordering in My Verizon online or by contacting Live Chat.
