My Kindle app books no longer show the words since the update yesterday. On certain books, the app crashed entirely. Please advise.

This was an OS update, not a kindle app update.
What phone, OS version, and app version are you using? Amazon will need to know that info in your email. You might also try to uninstall and reinstall the app. IDK if you can backup the books to your Amazon account, but if you can, do so before uninstalling.
You cannot uninstall the Kindle app on this devise. This is an OS update issue and not a kindle app issue.
Have you checked the Play Store for an update to the Kindle application? It might be preloaded on some devices, but it is updated from the Play Store.
I spoke with Verizon Customer Service, LG Customer Service and Amazon Customer Service a couple weeks ago. Amazon said they are aware of the problem and it seems to effect about every phone upgraded to Marshmallow. Amazon had no idea when it would be fixed. Apparently it IS an Amazon problem. It seems unreasonable that end users cannot remove this app until its fixed. Disabling it is really not enough, I want it removed. It cannot seriously be part of the OS kernel. Seems that VZW had to sign off on any apps that were "pre-installed." So let's get it removed!
