iphone 6 plus voicemail problem

My iphone 6 plus doesn't contain any received voicemails if cellular is off. There is only an indication of a missed call on the home screen. If I dial *86 the voicemail will be there and I can listen to it even though cellular is turned off. Can basic voicemail be used with the iphone? I have no verizon voicemail icon on the screen.

You wouldn't see a Verizon Visual Voicemail icon. When you go into the phone icon (where you make calls and look at call log) the 4th icon on the bottom should be "voicemail". That is where you access your visual voicemail. Basic voicemail doesn't work on the iPhone but you can access it by calling the number like you mentioned. Unless I'm misunderstanding your issue...
