Nexus 6P Android Marshmallow Stock Visual Voicemail on VZW

Is there a way to enable the stock visual voicemail in Marshmallow on my Nexus 6P? It seems like the issue is the lack of carrier support. Is there a way to enable it on Verizon or is there an ETA on when this functionality will be supported on Verizon. At present, it doesn't seem as if there is a supported visual voicemail solution for the Nexus 6P. I've been forced to enable the basic standard voicemail. It's kind of suboptimal on the latest android phone.

Maybe not through Verizon, but YouMail and Google Voicemail both offer apps with similar functionality to Verizon's visual voicemail, better in some functions. Have you looked into those options?

Suzy, I really don't want to use a third party solution. I'd rather get the stock VVM working.

I'm not crazy about visual voicemail so much that I have refused to upgrade my voicemail to the basic visual voicemail even if my current devices handle it.

Depending on your preference, you may not need to install any 3rd party apps. Once you sign-up/configure, you will receive a message (text, email, etc.) alert from your Google voice number each time you receive a vm. The alert also provides a transcription of the vm. If you want/need to access the actual vm recording, you can do this by: 1) calling your Google voice number, 2) online via the Google voice page, 3) via the Google voice app (you don't need to install the app unless accessing the vm recording via this method is your preference).

For those interested, below are the step by step instructions from Google:

On your computer, open Google Voice.
At the top right, click Settings .
Click Settings, then choose the Phones tab.
Click Add another phone.
Enter the name and number of your phone, and select Mobile as the phone type.
Click Save.
You will be prompted to verify your phone number. Click Connect and Google Voice will call your phone. Verify your phone by entering the code that appears in the “Verify your Phone” pop-up window.
Click Activate Google voicemail on this phone.
Follow the instructions to turn on Google voicemail. These will be different depending on your carrier.

thank, but l dont want to use google voice voicemail. I want to use the stock Android voicemail in Marshmallow.

The Nexus' stock VVM was built for Google/Google Voice, since it is a Google phone. Verizon's VVM uses a different server and the stock VVM app is not a Verizon VVM app like what is found on Verizon-branded phones.

I was of the same opinion until I got the my first vm text transcript this morning. I forgot to mention a friend of mine has the Nexus 5x and he called Verizon support and got it fixed. They reset his voicemail and removed "visual voicemail" from his account and he says it now works. Could be worth a try.

VZW just needs to adopted/add the protocol measures necessary, so Marshmallow VVM can be used as well. Whatever Apple did [from the very beginning] with their VVM capabilities--on any and ALL carriers--Google may want to take THAT page out of their book.

** I got tired of the ADVERTISEMENT for VZW's VVM app every time I received a voicemail. In turn, I called VZW, and the "feature" (aka annoying advertisement) has been removed. Now I just get the classic voicemail notification from missed phone calls. Though it IS 2015...I prefer that notification way over the VZW VVM app, or its advertising notification.

I'm somewhat skeptic, though...if VZW will ever get the Marshmallow VVM stock experience rolling. Today the update came to Phone app itself, and in the updated information, it says the feature is only available to three carriers--Project Fi, T-Mobile, and Orange. I just don't get the big deal. These LITTLE details about VZW frustrate me a LOT.

Hahahaha...carriers don't need APPS...!!!...outside of an app to manager one's account. Sheesh.

Apple hosts their own VVM and there is no way around it for carriers. Android for the most part Google doesn't have their own servers and carriers had to adopt their own.

Since Verizon currently uses Visual Voicemail through their own application, I would have to imagine that getting VVM to work in Marshmallow wouldn't be very hard, assuming Verizon is already using an OMTP capable setup. They would have to ensure the provisioning data tells the phone how to get the VVM. This may have to come in the next Lollipop update. The Verizon VVM app was to fill a void Android lacked but iPhone had for the longest time.

I'm preparing to hand a Nexus 5X to a family member to upgrade their device - if someone in Verizon is willing to work with me to work out a solution for VVM if there isn't one, I'm all ears.

Verizon definitely needs to support Android 6.0+'s built-in VVM capabilities. I'll be following this for updates.

I have a work around with phone fusion. Works good, but I would rather have stock.

Hey I'm not sure if this will help move this issue along but I spoke to a buddy of mine @ VZW, he's not in the end line CS area of things, and he suggested calling tech support directly for help with this issue. So I called tech support and asked them for some insight. They said they need someone who actually has a 6P device to contact them personally so they can take a look at the issue as it relates directly to the device they are using. Since I have not yet purchased my 6P it was of little use for me to call. That being said, the guy from tech support did state that no one from their end would ever know about this problem until someone calls and asks for their help fixing the issue. FYI any one who wants to volunteer can call them @ 866-221-4096. Good luck. I'm waiting for this issue to get resolved before buying my 6P.

I just spoke with someone at that number (866-221-4096). They were quite literally no help whatsoever. The basic attitude was "if you want that feature, buy a phone from Verizon". To be honest, that was the least helpful (and borderline condescending) call I've had with Verizon. I purchased my 6p about a month ago. I ported from AT&T and two things blew my mind - no LTE to CDMA voice fallback, and no visual voicemail. The first two people I spoke with seemed like they were helpful, and created a "case". But in the end it never went anywhere. As of the last call they refused to escalate, and also refused guidance on how to file a request for enhancement. I guess we go to google to see if Verizon will listen to someone with a louder voice...

WOW all I can say is [removal required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service] ? The guy I talked to in tech was adamant they could get to the bottom of this problem if they had someone with the phone in use on the network. Also it is NOT up to the first line tech support to whether or not a call is escalated to 2nd tier support if the customer makes the request to advance the problem. You would think since those calls are recorded that they would be a little smarter about how they deal with people. At this point maybe someone needs to take this issue and use some social media shaming to call VZW out on their inaction with this problem.

The simple solution would be for VZW to publish their visual voicemail application in the Play Store (like they did for the Galaxy Nexus). I don't have any idea why they don't already have it done (as it would allow them to easily update it instead of pushing firmware updates to phones via the manufacturer).
