Customer Service doesn't want to return deposit

After paying 4 months a lot of money, and always on time, I need to get out of this expensive contract. Called customer service, they said it would be 350$ to cancel it. That's not a problem at all. I expected this much.

Next thing he says is I will not get my 400$ security deposit back.

On the homepage I read this:

"When will I receive my security deposit refund?

You're eligible to receive your security deposit back at the end of 1 year of uninterrupted service or upon termination of your service. Uninterrupted service means you have kept your account in good standing and paid your bill in a timely manner for one year."

So please explain to me why they are trying to do that with me? Who can I talk to who is really willing to help? It makes no sence at all, I always paid on time and never had a bad credit with verizon. I want the termination of my service with getting back my deposit!

You will not get it back. Here's why.

The security deposit will be applied to the final bill which includes the etf. They aren't gonna refund you 400 bucks when you have an outstanding bill. Now of course you have the option to pay the final bill then wait for the sec deposit but that's a lot of hassle. It seems like you wanna have the 400 and have the final bill go to collections. That won't happen.

I did get an answer from Verizon and I'll see where that leads me. If it says black on white that I do get it back I am sure there is a way. But Thank you for your positivity, experience and good tips!

That makes no sense at all. I don't care if I pay the etf and get the deposit afterwards or if they just put everything on one bill and pay the difference. Which should be around 50 I guess.

That is not true. NOTHING anyone has signed states that you can't sue Verizon.

I think what pherson meant was that you would not get "all" of it back.

I think his premise is correct in that the security deposit would not be returned when there is an outstanding balance. When you terminate service, a $350 ETF would be applied to your account. That would be in addition to any balance on your final bill for service. This amount would be subtracted from your security deposit and the remaining(if any) would be returned to you.

Keep in mind, your final month of service IS NOT pro-rated. If you cancel service after your bill closing date but before you receive your final bill, you WILL be billed for a full month of service and THAT amount will be added to your $350 ETF on your final bill. Actually, you will get that final bill for a month of service because the bill was generated PRIOR to your terminating service and then you will get ANOTHER bill for the $350 ETF. I would suggest making sure you cancel service about 1 week before your bill closing date in order to make sure you are not charged for another month of service.

Be that as it may, 350 plus the final bill will be more than 400. Therefore the OP will be in the red anyway and will still end up owing Verizon. Given the fact that there was that large of a deposit indicates poor or no credit, so it comes across as if they want to get over on the etf.
