Got a Samsung Galaxy J1

So everytime my screen goes to sleep I have to unlock it?

Can I receive phone calls before I unlock screen?

New to smartphone.

Seems to be a pain seeing that screen goes to sleeep a lot and have to unlock everytime to use it

Is this true?

You might want to check out the classes that some corporate stores present for learning more about the phone uses. Reading the user manual can also be helpful.

This is a great phone & happy that you have reached out to us for help. When you receive a phone call, you are able to answer a phone call. The screen will illuminate when a calls come through for you to answer it. Are you having problems with not being able to make a call when the screen dims?
