Can't play sound through external speakers

Whenever I try to connect phone (via headphone jack) with a small speaker it immediately turns the volume down and says it cannot play through headphones? Sounds like this is some kind of safety net to prevent listening to music too loudly through headphones, but these are speakers?

The speakers connect to other phones just fine. Any thoughts?

We always want you to be able to enjoy using speakers. Have you tried another set of speakers or bluetooth speakers? I would try those out and see. With speakers it does start at a certain volume but is normally able to go up and down based on your preference. Also I would make sure your phone is up to date.
