Can Verizon extend upgrade date even though I did not buy a new phone through them?

I purchased a phone outright from a third party after my iPhone died one year in to my contract. After transferring my SIM from the Iphone to the Nexus, Verizon has extended my upgrade date out an additional year. Isn't the whole point of waiting two years for a phone upgrade based on the idea that you are paying off the phone as you go? The price is just mysteriously wrapped up in your monthly payment...

Based on Verizon's policy that I can upgrade my phone at any time, transfer to a payment plan for the phone and simply pay an additional $20 a month until the original contract is up, I would end up paying a total of $820 for a 16g iPhone 5, that at the time of purchase (iPhone 6 had already been released) retailed for $450. Someone please tell me this is a joke.

Yes, if anyone made a deal with retention that would extend your contract.

ON the other hand, I brought a used phone in for activation a few years ago, and the green clerk put me on a 2 year contract when he gave me a SIM card. Fortunately I caught it before I left the store and had the fix it. Check your my documents at the time you added the Nexus and see if somebody messed up.

I bought it unlocked from Google. And the main account holder upgraded his

phone this year, but I don't know the specifics. I do not understand why I

would be penalized for his upgrade.

A contract is 2 years not 1 year. If you were 1 year into your contract then that means you have 1 year left. Exactly what was the date you started your contract?

IF he used your upgrade, but it would extend 2 years not one.

You contract date is now 2018 and not 2017? If you contract date is 2017 then that should be correct if it's 1 year past your contract.
