WiFi turns itself on in airplane mode

I have a Motorola Razr Maxx HD droid phone. When I put my phone into airplane mode, usually while I sleep or to conserve batteries, eventually the phone turns wi-fi back on automatically, even though airplane mode is still enabled. Is this a bug or is there a setting somewhere? I would think airplane mode means all networks are OFF and stay OFF until I turn off airplane mode.

That's definitely a valid point and I would also assume that Airplane Mode would indeed disable all radios on the device. Taking a look at the user manual for the device found here, http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/droid-razr-maxx-hd/, it states "When you select airplane mode, all wireless services are disabled. You can then turn Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth® power back on, if permitted by your airline. Other wireless voice and data services (such as calls and text messages) remain off in airplane mode. Emergency calls to your region’s emergency number can still be made." In this case, your device would definitely have the ability to use Wi-Fi while Airplane Mode is enabled and may turn on based on your current Wi-Fi Settings. But the problem is that my phone is doing it by itself! I turn off wi-fi and mobile data, and turn on airplane mode. I then go to sleep. When I wake up, I see that airplane mode is still on but now wi-fi is turned on. This happens probably 50% of the time. Can an app be doing that by itself?

I know how important this is for you. Third-party applications could change settings on your phone. When did this first being to happen? What new applications have you installed or have been updated?
