switched back to my Env2 with a pre-paid plan, now can't access the web, email etc: "Communication error". data is part of the plan.

I switched from an Android phone back to my old Env2 and a prepaid plan.  When I was using this phone five years ago, I could access the web, my emails, etc.  Now I can't; I get a "communication error" when I try.  Phone and texting work fine.  Data is part of the pre-paid plan.  any thoughts?
