Voicemail problems, basic flip-phone

I have a basic Samsung Haven flip phone. It always displays the voicemail icon. Never goes away. Voicemail alert tone is on but never plays it. The only way to find out if I have a new voicemail is to dial my voicemail. Saved voicemail stays forever. This problem is going on 2 years+ now.

I have used Verizon's Troubleshooter for this but it didn't help. Ideas anyone?

Having a notification on the phone that wouldn’t go away would bug me to. So let’s put a stop to it right away timetripper. What zipcode are you currently in? Have you checked for any new software updates on the phone?
