Why is my signal strength so low after switching to LTE, resulting in dropped calls and poor reception?

Ever since the LTE service came online, my signal strength is much lower. Usually only one or 2 bars. This is resulting in slower data exchanges but more importantly, dropped calls or extremely poor reception. This is happening in places that it didn't used to.

We want you to have the best signal possible, Caguirre65. I have a few questions that will help to get us pointed towards a resolution. When did you first begin to notice this issue? Do you know if any other Verizon Wireless customers are having similar issues in your local area? Do you notice this issue at multiple locations both inside and outside?

While it wouldn't decrease the actual signal strength-- if you are in an area that doesn't have a great LTE signal with 4G data that's limited and/or not reliable, and you are using the HD Voice/Advanced calling feature (which is enabled by default on newer 4G devices) you might run into issues like you are describing. This occurs more than it might have been for voice calls previously, as with this newer feature/technology it is using data to supplement the voice calls whereas previously it was strictly a "voice-only" function for calls and didn't involve data whatsoever.

To see if this is the issue you can turn off the LTE for the voice on the device itself (depending on what phone it is), or even turn off the Advanced Calling/HD voice feature in the settings menu. Otherwise, you can remove the feature online or over the phone with a rep and test the service over the next day or so to gauge the difference and to determine if this is going to be a better option with this service turned off.

Some areas (generally more rural or "off-the-beaten-path") just don't have a good enough LTE signal to support using the data to supplement phone calls and in these areas you might have to turn this off as a trade-off to getting more reliable voice calls/quality.
