Hello,
I had some issues with my Samsung Continuum and had to do a factory reset.
I thought it comes included with Android 2.2, but my version says 2.1... is there any way to update the OS on the phone?
Thanks,
Andrew
Ann154 wrote:As far as I know, Android 2.2 is not available for the Continuum. Nor I have I heard even a rumor if it is coming someday.
That is correct, it is stock with 2.1 , and with all the rumblings with the Fascinate, I would think that it would be soon, but I agree, I have not heard 1 thing about an update.
Cloud? I really am disliking my fascinate more each day. Never thought I would miss my IPhone 3GS with AT&T but I am. Unfortunately, I am only 1 year into my contract with Verizon so I cannot upgrade this phone yet...
I asked about the 2.2 software for Fascinate and was told by Verizon CS that it was upto Samsungf to roll upgrades. I am not holding my breath...
Thanks for the info. I am about the now so I quizzed the system for an update and requested it. 15 miutes to download.
I ran the update yesterday(when I got the phone), but it still shows my version as 2.1-update1 not 2.2

Are you talking about the Continuum? The poster above you was talking about the update for the Fascinate. I have not heard a peep from Samsung about the Continuum, I would follow Samsung's GalaxySSupport on twitter and ask them. I follow them now, and will pose the question.
From what I have gathered after searching the internet, is the Continuum probably will not be updated. Verizon has no information and Samsung won't say one way or another. It makes me feel like i've gotten an motorola devour.. Moto never bothered to update it from 1.6 and just left their customers hanging...
Hello rjval3n,
I know how frustrating this has to be for you and I do apologize for the experience you had at the store. However, I would like to advise you until a product is release we are unable to discuss any details until the actual launch date. We do value every one of our customers and strive to provide you with great service.
Here it is July already. Any more word on the 2.2 update for Continuum?
Nearly August. Fascinate has had it a while. Obvious security flaws and risks. Multiple promises from Verizon Wireless sales and support reps that an update is on the way. Yet, no word on when to expect it. Interesting.
Well, I for one am dissapointed in the non-upgrade of the Continuum. I've got a friend who owns a Droid and he's been upgraded to Android 3, while my wife is running across apps that won't run because she's got Android 2.1. (She has a Continuum as well.) I don't believe that Verizon has no input in the upgrade process with Samsung. I think it's a marketing decision and Verizon isn't planning to continue supporting the Continuum. The last update was in January of 2011 and that was to the 2.1 system, not an upgrade to 2.2. After six months, I'm not holding my breath expecting to see 2.2 for the Continuum - ever.
Prove me wrong, Verizon.
Based on the fact that I just got my Continuum free about a week ago I don't think there are any plans to update the OS. Which kinda **bleep** me off a little. I also cannot play flash games either which is a major bummer! Heard there will be an update for Flash in October though. I knew I shoulda just saved the mula and got a tablet! You get what you pay for though, right?
Really? Ya bleeped that word? LOL.
I just check for update , and nothinh yet, samsung has already release update of firmware but does not seem to come to VZ nor they plan to roll it, VZ need to keep their restrictions/customizations on the Operating system before rolling the update, but who long we need to wait for it, another year ? google is already on 2.3 and here we are waiting for ....
I guess , only step to update is to root the phone and install new version
JohnB, if you have noticed, there is little understanding or patience on this board. XDA has had an update out for almost 2 weeks. Maybe Verizon should hire them to get the update out. It just seems Verizon has "more important" customers than us Continuum customers.
Lately my phone freezes to where I have to remove the battery to get it to unfreeze. I've been told this is because we are operating on an out of date version in 2.1. Verizon please update or recall the Continuum and allow us to switch phones.
CY cONTINUUM DOES EXACTLY THE SAME THING. I HAVE TO REMOVE AND REPLACE BATTERY ALMOST EVERYDAY! THIS IS ABSURD. VERIZON AND SAMSUNG STINK AND DON'T SEEM TO GIVE A RIP ABOUT US. They sure wantoed to sell me this phone. I have replaced my Continuum 3 times through verizon but they won't give me a different phone!
I think Verizon and Samsung have not given this phon version of the Galaxy S fmily Android 2.2 or 2.3 yet I really want the update and we deserve to be treated better than this.
I bought this phone for my wife for her birthday in March. It is the worst phone ever and all I get from version is try a hard reset. From everything I am reading here is if they would get the update out most of her problems would be resolved. I wish she had never chose the continuum. It drops calls, randomly changes ring tones, rings sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. Many times it can not receive or send text messages. I wish Verizon cared as much about it's customers as it does its bottom line.
This phone needs 2.2. I haven't recieved any RSS feeds in months because of your broken 2.1 update. Very crappy customer service for the Continuum Verizon.
Samsung reports that they have released the upgrade to 2.2 to Verizon for this phone, but Verizon has not released it for Continuum, and is very unhelpful as to when or if they will release 2.2 or 2.3 for this phone.
I am very disappointed in Verizon's support of this phone. We bought two of them and never got the rebate, which means that we paid top dollar for unsupported phones. All of my friends have been updated to 2.3 on their phones, and I cannot use voice command with my Bluetooth with android 2.1, which makes it very cumbersome when traveling...
Come on Verizon, it's almost a year since this phone came out. It's still being sold as the ONLY Galaxy S phone in your store and you won't give it the 2.2 update?!?
Same problems here. I bought the phone because it was decently priced but didn't realize that it wasn't upgradeable to 2.2. I'm having constant issues and its as fast as a slug. I turned off all processor hungry apps and its still problematic. I need to pull the battery every other day and this is definitely not acceptable since I use it for work. Its terrible how verizon gives their basic canned answers on these forums. We're paying customers, give us what we deserve. I have been a loyal customer for 10 years, isn't that worth something?
I have had my continuum since January and was told when i bought it that the 2.2 and the 2.3 update would be made available for the continuum as well as all the other Galaxy S phones. I have followed XDA on there developments and from what i understand Samsung has the update ready but it is up to Verizon to verify the upgrade and test it then push it out to us. Like others of you have said Verizon does not care about the continuum or the costumers that bought them. This upgrade should have come out the same time as the fascinates upgrade. I have called samsung and used their live chat support here is what i continually get from them:

sigh. that is **bleep**. Hell Droid X's have 2.3 and they are way older than the continuum and they have worse hardware. The continuum is my first experience with a smartphone and I gotta say I really screwed up in my selection if there is never an update, cause one of the main reasons I bought mine too was because 2.2 was promised.
I was informed by a customer service rep from Verizon Wireless, about 2-3 weeks ago, that there will be an update for Samsung Continuum, 2.1 android OS "in a couple of weeks"... Still no update!!! I feel your pain!!

I notice this says nothing about the actual issue. Thanks for apologizing for the issue of the phone. Now tell us why we're not getting the update. That's all we ask. Just. Answer. The. Question.

Hi zebraedsgirl,
I apologize for any misinformation provided about a software update for your device. Please be assured that while Verizon Wireless employees DO NOT have any information available for any software update release for any device, we will push all software updates as released by the manufacturers.
Antonio -
I beg your pardon.
A number of us have spoken to Samsung, by phone and by email, and we have been advised that the update HAS indeed BEEN sent to Verizon; the hold up is that Google & Verizon must approve it before it is released to the public / users.
The hold up is on the part of Google AND VERIZON. Samsung says they have done their job!
Why is Verizon not releasing this? If need Google approval first, then WHY has Verizon not put some pressure on Google, on behalf of all of us frustrated customers???
I bought my Continuum right after it was released - end of November - a YEAR ago. It is the ONLY phone in this Galaxy S line that has NOT recieved this update!
A good number of the apps that I want to run are "NOT compatible with your version of Android". This is RIDICULOUS!
Lets be honest, Verizon, we are not going to get the OS update! We are stuck on 2.1.. Just tell us, so we know what is going on. How about a little truth?
It comes across that Verizon just wants to sell a newer phone!
It is apparent from the Verizon responses on this forum that a 2.2 update is not going to happen. There really is no recourse other than to switch carriers except I am tied into a business account with 6 lines of service and multiple anniversary dates.
I will be filing a complaint with the better business Bureau and with the Commissioner of Commerce. I recommend that other Continuum owners do the same as these entities are there to protect consumers from companies that choose to operate in this manner.
Both complaints are available online and take very little effort to complete.
A little honesty and integrity on Verizon's part could eliminate all these issues. I did not buy from Samsung, I bought from Verizon and it is their responsibility to force Samsung to provide updates.
I hope others will see this post and act on it.
Tidbits -
could you give us a contact email and/or phone where we can all send our complaints? I would think that they need to all go to the same place to have any possible effect.
thanks!
PiccPete
Continuum purchased Black Friday last year. I love the phone... but I can't d/l half of the apps that are out there!

Vibrant users got their update quickly right after they stopped blaming the carrier and sent alll their complaints to Samsung. Just a FYI.
Most Vibrant users sent them to the CEO's email addresses as well as Samsung technical support email address.

Might be possible to call them directly
I agree, Verizon is just being evasive now hoping Samsung Continuum owners give up and get a different phone. I'm thinking of doing that, but with a different carrier.
My opinion is that Froyo for Continuum isn't coming or they'd at least tease us with something about that. I spent way too much time on the phone this week with Verizon reps, Samsung reps and trying to reach Google because none of them will own up having a hand in OS updates. Vzw says Samsung handles the operational updates, Samsung says Vzw does it, another Vzw person says a Samsung person told her that Google does it.
It's insulting that they would think I'm too stupid to know that they handle it themselves. After all these years, I think it's time I stop saying how great Verizon is, pack up and head elsewhere with my four lines. Thank God 3 of them are up for renewal!

Perfectly understandable. Here's the kicker: when thousands of your customers have an issue, and you don't know how to answer it? Your next step is to speak to someone who does. Talk to the person highest on the foodchain that you have direct access to. If they don't know, ask them to talk talk to the highest person on the food chain that THEY have direct access to, and to tell that person to do the same, utnill someone is reached who does have information. Why hasn't this been done yet? This has been going on for over a year now. "I dunno" isn't good enough at this point.

CHECK OUT SAMSUNG'S OFFICIAL GLOBAL BLOG.
so OK, dont give us IceCream Sandwich, at LEAST upgrade us to 2.2 (or 2.3).Half of the apps on the market are NOT compatible with our Continuum phones!
EVERYONE SHOUD POST ON HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Samsung confirms that Galaxy S phones will NOT get update to ICS. Continuum is a Galaxy S.My comment: could they at LEAST give us 2.2 and 2.3 ??????????
News Cnet dot com
QUOTE:
Announced in October, Ice Cream Sandwich adds a number of new features to devices on the platform, the main one being the unification of the OS for both tablets and smartphones, as well as the addition of software-based buttons that replace the ones that have been physical buttons. As with other major releases of Android, it carries with it particular hardware requirements, leaving a number of older devices stuck on certain versions indefinitely.
Owners of Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone and the 7-inch Galaxy Tab won't be getting the latest and greatest version of Android .
In a on a Korean promotional site run by Samsung, the company noted that the two devices would not receive the update to Android 4.0, the most up to date version of Google's mobile operating system.
The reason for that, as The Verge explains, centers around Samsung's use of additional software features on those phones, including TouchWiz, widgets, video calling and carrier software pack-ins. These suck up hardware resources to the point of giving users a less than desirable Android experience, Samsung says.
Sure to make things a bit complicated is that the Galaxy S is a close sibling of Samsung's recently-released Galaxy Nexus --at least on paper. That phone ships with Android 4.0, known more readily as Ice Cream Sandwich.
Well, several days of new posts lost in transition. I guess they were hoping we'd have forgotten about this. I'm going to make sure these posts stay active until they hear that we want our update.
Being the Continuum has been out for a while now, and from what I have read online, Samsung did release an update for the phone and handed it over to Verizon for them to place it on their network, but Verizon never did; like I said, this is what I have read. And supposidly, the Froyo update that Samsung gave to Verizon has been leaked out. You can read on how to flash your phone and download it here: Edited to adhere to TOS

Correct. Samsung did produce the update. They gave it to Verizon, yet Verizon chose not to purchase it. It is out there, resolves several issues, and is very stable. Verizon chooses not to give it to customers. Because of this, we can believe Samsung will never produce 2.3 for this phone.
The bottom line is we need to be very vocal with Verizon that this kind of customer service is unacceptable. It is because of this that I have been talking people out of switching to Verizon. I have been pushing them towards AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. This needs to cost Verizon by NOT putting the update out there. Once my phone is out of warranty, (Edited to comply with TOS)
Interesting that my last comment was edited. I didn't mention any sites, only that I planned to pursue other methods to insure my phone stays up to date, since Verizon won't do it. They really do hate us Continuum owners.
Funny thing, though, a Verizon rep told me that they release all updates that Google produces. So, it seems that it's Google's fault for never producing 2.2. What an idiot. This has gotten beyond a joke with this update now. Now the reps are saying whatever they want to get us to shut up. I'm glad I'm talking people from switching to Verizon. I'm hoping I can now start talking people out of staying with them.
I just switched back to my Continuum last night and when it came on i had an update to 2.2 that was ready to be downloaded. It finally happened..
OMG!!! Finally, finally, finally! I had honestly given up and had quit checking. Well, we'll never see GB, but this should be better; Flash, save apps to card, and I've heard a little improvement on battery life.
I am SOOO happy. Finally my phone actually works! This 2.2.2 update seems to have fixed almost all the problems with the phone (constant freezing and slow browsing) and now I'm happy to say that the phone is better than my friend's Iphone 4 in terms of performance.
The one issue still present though is that the ticker is still inconsistent, but I'm guessing that is Verizon's crappy servers and not the phone's fault.
Here's hoping to 2.3 and ICS for our beloved Continuum in the future!
I know ICS won't happen. The phone only has 500 MB of RAM and needs 1 GB. I'm not going to be looking for 2.3 either. I'm like you, at least we finally got 2.2. It has improved performance; better signal strength, better battery usage (20-25% better, at least), saving apps to SD card, and Flash. It's almost like having a new phone.
Oh ICS requires 1gig of ram? Oh well. 2.3 would be cool though but I know someone with it and it doesn't seem too much different. But seriously 2.2 is amazing for this phone. I feel like I've been using a piece of junk for almost a year now until this update.
Has anyone noticed the changes in some of the settings? For one, the "Stay Awake" option under Applications/Development while plugged in is gone with the new update to 2.2 .... which really stinks when you are tethering your phone or downloading...it times out the app when the screen shuts down. Maximum screen time is now 10 min. I use my phone to tether internet on my laptop when no internet is available and without the "Stay Awake" option it's pretty useless. I understand they did this to save on battery but if it's plugged in, it shouldn't matter. I downloaded an app that was supposed to be able to keep the phone awake when in certain applications, but it does not work. Any ideas?
Second thing I have noticed you no longer have the option to turn all sounds off with the vibrate option enabled. If you have any vibrate option enabled under sounds, when you use your side controls, vibrate is the lowest you can go, even if you use the power button to turn off sounds, it will still be on vibrate. If you turn the vibrate feature off in sounds, then when you use your controls it goes from a low tone to off. Why did they take the option away on the side controls? At times I need my sounds all the way off, no vibrate or anything and at other times I need vibrate on so it doesn't annoy others. It's a pain to go into settings/sounds each time to change this when needed.
I did notice that there is no longer a silence option, and it's the one thing I miss. I, too, wish they had kept it. Not sure the reasoning it was not included. Not sure if it being left off was a Samsung thing or Android. Someone with Froyo on another device, such as Droid or Incredible, would have to speak to whether it was an option on those phones.
my phone crashed during the update....went into a continuous loop for hours, I had to do a factory reset to get my phone functional again which really sucked cause I lost everything and had to restore from backups. Only thing I couldn't restore were my apps. I thought maybe some of this was happening because of the crash, but I see that it is not. I spoke with Verizon several times and they were clueless about these settings, told me to use my other phone line upgrade to get a new phone, I thought "Why?" phone works I just wanted to know where the settings went that used to be on the phone.
I also notice that when you receive a text now, the screen goes black before you even get the chance to read the text on the ticker, I would assume they changed this for the complaints of the battery life but I would really like this back, anyone know how?
I had a texting issue start up too. I can receive texts right away, but now it takes like 3 days (seriously) for my replies to get back to the sender. Sooooo annoying. I feel like my ability to communicate is gone, since like most smart phone users I feel like I've lost a major limb without a present and functioning phone! ;p I was told I'd have to do a factory reset too or possibly replace the phone (wish my husband didn't have a strange aversion to replacement plans right now). Sucky!
there is a great app that you can use with gmail account to backup all your texts.... SMS Backup+ you can then view your texts in your gmail and if your phone crashes or you need to do a factory reset, you can restore the texts. There is also an app called Mobile Backup II, it also will back up your texts to your SD card, your contacts, your call log and your calendar. I used it to restore my calendar and call log, but haven't tried to restore the other 2 from it..... great for if you need to restore. I am still looking for a backup for you apps....does anyone know of one? After the factory reset my phone is still not right especially the battery, dies very quickly. But I want to make sure everything is backed up before I try to get it fixed.....
i read your post the thing i dont get is mine went from being ok to totaly having all the problems you say it fixed lol.. any ideas on that one...
