General Thought on Galaxy Nexus

Hey Everyone, who else got their Nexus yesterday?! I wanted to start a thread to see some other thoguhts about the phone from people or issues people might be having. So far I have not had any major issues. Only things is within an hour of phone being on, which was fully charged, I was down to 89% battery today....I have all wifi/GPS/ etc off. Even turned off 4G since it is not in my area yet, granted ive been using it alot but we shall see.

that's probably pretty good. expect to get about 3 hours of ACTUAL use. depending on how you use it, you may get through a whole day on one charge, but you may not. if you are using it for 3-4 hours straight, then it's going to be dead. if you power up and it's idle most of the day and you use it for 3 hours periodically, then you will likely get through a whole day on one charge. for example, if you take it off the charger at 7 am but only play with it periodically (calls, texts, apps, etc), but it is idling most of the time, then it will last all day. if you take it off the charger at 7 am and watch a movie and then browse for an hour, it will be nearly dead by noon. actual useage is what to watch on it.

The only minor disappointment for me is the lack of a global audio setting. I can't tweak the sound of all apps on the phone at one time. I'm coming from a Droid X where this was really nicely done. Outside of that I'm very impressed. The screen, camera and overall performance is very nice.

Hopefully VZN will make a separate section for the Galaxy Nexsus like they have for the DROID X. I'm sure we'll start seeing any issues start popping up as more people get that phone. I went to the Verizon store yesterday to just see and play with it. I was very impressed with its speed (4G), brilliant screen, and the camera (fast & nice clear pics even though its only 5MP).

I did notice that it comes with only a 32GB Internal memory and apparently no external card capabaility. Is that true? And the battery looks removable?

have fun with that .. will probably upgrade in the next 4 months or so.

Issues:

Tons of people(including myself) are reporting banding issues/white look grayish with auto brightness turned on/low brightness setting.

Also, the worst signal out of the other 4g phones. But I won't complain about it until I actually start getting dropped calls, no connection, etc.

While playing music on my speaker, the volume seems to be going in and out.

The phone is the slowest charging phone I've ever had. Looks like when the phone is being used, it is either not chargeing or slows down so much that it's pointless, because the battery will still drain if you're using netflix or whatever.

Had mine since the 15th a few of problems I'm having is the 4g signal is almost nonexistent in a known strong area 3g is a little better but when it switches back and forth Sometime I lose all signals for up to 2 to 3 minutes which is unacceptable.

The other is battery is 5 hours of very little use.

This may just have to go back I'm having surgery first part of January doctors say they have to take my leg at the knee which will leave me incapacitated up to 6 months till new leg is ready and wife works 12 hour nights more worried a bought losing signal than battery.

Any recommendation on other phones or trouble shooting.

I'm also seeing a weird thing happening. When I turn on WiFi, my 3G signal immediately drops 1-2 bars. Anyone else seeing this?

Well, if you've been following my experiences lately, then you can imagine what I would suggest.

But that would be a rather crass thing to do, considering your circumstances. So I'll just send along all my hopes and prayers and wish a successful surgery and a speedy recovery for you and your family.

I purchased the 2100 battery, got it for 25 at the Verizon store, was half off. So far it has been good. Only major complaint I am having is the extremely slow response when typing a text or email, it doesnt seem to be able to keep up with my typing, not that I even type all that fast

Coming from a Thunderbolt and a Charge I find my new Galaxy Nexus to be Amazing. It's quick, I love ICS, and it doesn't seem pieced together like the Droid Charge's new Gingerbread updated. I have noticed my signal bar looks like it's lower than it was on my Charge but that could just be that it looks different because I haven't really had any abnormal signal issues. I do have the issue were I can't sync Facebook contacts but really I've been trying to phase out FB and only use my G+ page more anyways good thinking by Google to accidentally leave out that feature for now. Speaker seems a little on the quite side but other than that I am very happy with it.

They didn't accidentally leave it out. They warned Facebook about their flawed implementation and pulled the plug. It's up to Facebook to listen and fix it now.

I upgraded from a Droid Eris so it was quite a step up for me. This is a really impressive phone, the only thing I was really apprehensive about before I bought it was the camera, but it was by no means a deal breaker and the shots I've taken with it so far are way better than I had anticipated.

I've got a great 4g signal on mine, the battery has held up fairly well with some moderate use. I actually couldn't believe how fast the battery charges on this phone. I saw were some had mentioned it was slow.

The only complaint I have so far is the speaker volume, got it cranked all the way up and it's still not loud enough. Hopefully from what I've read this will be addressed in a software update.

I have noticed the exact same issue. I'm not a fast typer, however, the Nexus cannot keep up with me while composing text/email. There is significant lag and then the words pop onto the screen, which usually results in errors. I have noticed the following issues as well, some of which are echoes of other posts I have seen on the web already. Hopefully these issues will actually be addressed....

1) Slow response time while composing text or email (referenced above). This has probably been the worst technical issue I have encountered. One would think with twice the processing power, this should not be an issue compared to my prior Fascinate, Incredible, and even the BB Storm. Yes, I said the Storm can keep up where the Nexus cannot.

2) When composing an email, if I type a word not recognized by the dictionary (i.e. latr) I am prompted to add the term to the dictionary, which is nothing new. However, when I click to add to the dictionary, the entire text except the word disappears. Super annoying. This is completely separate from "Tap to Add". It is a popup which forces you to select whether to add it or not. A related issue is a spell check feature that pops up before you send a text. I cannot figure out how to disable this b/c when texting and using many abbreviated terms, it is quite annoying. Let me know if someone figures out how to turn this off.

3) I do not like the way ICS sets up txt conversations at all. They are difficult to read with the all white background and the contact's pic (and your own if you actually have a pic for yourself) is on every line instead of just at the top of the conversation (as if you would forget who you were talking to). Unlike prior versions of Andriod, the texts are not color coordinated to be distinguishable as to who is typing (if I remember correctly, it was blue and green for each side of the conversation and the texts were in a sort of bubble of their own). Now, it's just back and forth white lines and if you don't have a profile pic for the person with whom you are conversing, you will need re-read portions of the text to figure out who said what. To further gripe, it's difficult to easily distinguish new text messages from old ones in the list b/c the only difference is a brighter white to identify the new text. The text setup for 2.3 was perfect, though simplistic (sometimes simpler is better). This is totally a preference issue though and many may love the new setup.

4) If you have contact pic stored for someone, it is distorted and blown up when they call instead of being displayed in it's original size. This is a minor issue, but might as well bring them all up.

5) On the homescreen, unlike with 2.3 where you have the convenient settings button where you can add/remove screens, this feature seems to be completely removed. I.e. if I only wanted two homescreens, with say 25 total apps, this is no longer possible. You have 5 screens and they are either blank or contain objects such as widgets, etc.

6) The audio of the speaker is EXTREMELY low. I've tried everything and the volume at max while watching, for example, Netflix or Youtube is about 25-50% of every other phone I've owned. It was actually embarrassing when I was showing off the Netflix capability b/c no one could hear the movie. This is a big issue that can hopefully be resolved with an update.

7) The former "option", or "File" button as some would describe it on prior versions of Android, now serves a completely different purpose. It brings up a random screen with shortcuts to all of your programs. Not sure what the benefit is of this is b/c it's like taking away the right click functionality of a mouse and replacing it with a link to your favorite websites.

8) This is a general comment b/c I think Android has always been setup this way, but the "comma" needs a place on the ABC keyboard. You shouldn't have to go to the 123 keyboard to type comma. Solution: Make the "GO" button 1/2 the size, put comma where the microphone is put the microphone in the corner next to GO. Rocket science, I know.

9) Text fields in the browser, where you would type say a login name or email appear to be partially cutoff, meaning the text is bigger than the field and does not display completely. This may be website specific, however, I've noticed it pretty consistently.

This is about all I have for now on the complaint front. Despite the above issues, the majority of which are cosmetic, I do really like the phone. It is super fast, no doubt. They should have left in the SD card, but for some reason, cell phone manufacturers will never get the "perfect phone" concept down. Overall, I am content, but the text coloration, volume, and slow typing response time are almost "must fixes" for me. Get to work Samsung.

This is app specific. The way you are discribing it makes me believe it's a app issue that you installed more than the OS itself. A lot of things are not compatible with ICS. There will be quirks and I have both the GSM and LTE models and I do not have what you discribe.

Believe this is another app issue. I have not run into this yet. To turn it off it's in the SAME location as it has been with the Eris, Fascinate and Incredible

You can always use something else. Handcent, GoSMS and such provide the same thing if not better in your flavor. You don't have to use the stock messanging app. Also from what I remember you are using SKINNED versions of Android based on the ones you said you have. The STOCK android messanging app hasn't changed. The Samsung uses Touchwiz, and the Incredbile uses Sense.

It's how the picture is saved. The pixelation happens due to low resolution picture being blown up to fit. If you used a high resolution picture and reduced the size it'll come out better regardless of the size of the box I learned that the hard way many moons ago with different things throughout the years.

You can always use ADWLauncher which does this. You are using skinned versions. People complain about "updates" not coming quick enough due to overlays which honestly doesn't account for the main reasons of the delay.

I can't account for this. I don't use the stock speakers. There is supposed to be an update to help with this. I always use my bluetooth which is louder with the Nexus than ANY previous Android devices I have owned.

It's a multitask button... It shows your cached and running programs which you can swipe to remove. The option button is 3 dots and usually now in the bottom right. This is honestly a welcome change especially for newcomers who have never used Android before.

ICS keyboard has different layouts DEPENDING on the API used. You can also MOVE the mic button and I believe it will be replaced with the comma. Too lazy right now(going to bed) to test it.

most mobile site versions are not optimized for 720p. It'll happen often. I believe the 4.0.3 update Google may "help" with this problem.

SD card was left out for a reason. For the past 2 years with apps2SD people were complaining about widgets disappearing, ring tones reseting, apps disappearing, and app icons going missing. People kept blaming the manufacturer, and it was actually Android causing the problem. This bug was completely removed with using MTP over Mass storage. In the near future removable storage will be no more with Android unless Google can figure out how to get mass storage to work without causing the above.
You need to say... Get to work Google... Google handles the updates for this device and everything comes straight from them.

I suppose any new phone is going to have some room for improvement. The weak speaker and power button placement mentioned are on Samsung, not ICS.

There are many Android apologists that are being too upbeat, however. This is the first phone on ICS and this sounds like Thunderbolt, Bionic and Razr threads. What has changed with ICS? I ask sincerely, not sarcastically.

Amazon has the Razr at higher prices than the Galaxus. Maybe people still want the Razr more?

The main purpose of the Galaxy Nexus is to be a developers device. Consumers want more than what the Nexus has. The Galaxy Nexus is meant to be the bar that devices AFTER this version SHOULD be equal to or better than. In about a month the specs of all the devices out that will have ICS will be about 10-20% better than the Nexus.

You are correct. However, I wanted the Galaxy Nexus for pure Android with no skins. The Droid X was my first Android phone and I loved it. It has its quirks, but most of the quirks are because of Motorblur. The update lag is also because of Motorblur....

The camera is about the only spec that is lower than most phones. 5mp is good enough for me, if I want a picture to blow up and look nice, I will get my DSLR out :smileyvery-happy: .

I am loving the Nexus. Most of my programs work really well without ICS optimization. I found one paid program that I could not load from the market because it says it's not compatible, but it runs just fine. Not sure why they think it is not compatible, but maybe I will get an answer to my email in the next few days.

Will there be a phone out in the next couple of months that will blow the Nexus away? You can bet on it. There is already talk of the Motorola Maxx hitting the Verizon Cellbrite system, and I am sure that other manufacturers will have other smartphones out in Q1 of 2012 with ICS. But they will all come with skins. Good luck with that :smileyvery-happy: .

I love my Nexus, sure its not a 'perfect' phone, but its amazing. I haven't seen too many issues with data coverage, at one point a few days ago I turned my data off while I was out shopping, got in my car and turned 4g back on to listen to pandora and my nexus took about 3 minutes to connect to any kind of data. Other than that its been fine. As far as the camera goes, I actually prefer this camera over the Razr's. My old phone was the droid2 and before that it was the OG droid and I cannot describe how much I hated the delayed shutter. It made me so mad. I am glad to take a lower mexapixel camera(5MP is fine for casual photos, if you want high quality photos get a nice camera, not a camera phone)that has zero shutter lag. This phone is super fast, my buddy has the LG Revolution and he is so jealous over the speed, look and feel of the phone. Could the phone be better? Sure, battery life is always rough on a smart phone, sound volume is a little low. Also a lot of my games aren't able to play on the Nexus, I'm assuming its because of ICS. The game will load to the menu and then take me back to the phones main menu. I'm hoping the games just need to update to ICS for me to play it.

Got my phone on the 15th and loving it. :smileyhappy: But then, this is a huge upgrade from OG Droid that I had.

The battery life for me is great (so far). With the OG Droid, I couldn't get cell phone signal at my work desk at all (picture one of those who are holding their cell phone in the air and going around in circles trying to obtain some sort of cell phone signal to make a call) and the wi-fi signal continually went in and out as well. With the Nexus, I've noticed much improved wi-fi signal (the location of where the wireless routers are placed at work could also have contributed to the variance in signal on my old phone, though).

At work, I only use my phone to listen to Pandora and with wifi off, battery only decreased by 25% in an 8 hour work day. Factor in text messaging (a lot) and accessing the web as well, it drops to 50%. I haven't tried watching Netflix on it yet. Battery has been good so far with wi-fi.

4G service is OK. It's great in the places that I need it, except for at home. Signal drops to 3G as soon as I enter our neighborhood. Wi-fi compensates for that.

The only issues I've encountered are:

1. Extreme touch sensitivity while using the native keyboard. I type quite fast and instead of recognizing the letter I want, it will choose the keys below, above, and next to it. (my fingers aren't an issue because they are slim and small - female over here) It drove me crazy since I really didn't want to bother adjusting the settings. However, now that Swype beta is available for ICS, problem has been solved.

2. Volume (which is a given). I never used the vibrate option (annoying), but I have to with this phone to get notified of any calls or texts along with the notification sounds at max. I'm hoping 4.0.3 will fix it (crossing fingers!)

3. Picture quality. I don't take pictures much, but when I do, I still have to take several in a row to get the best one that is actually in focus (auto focus doesn't work as well, even after tapping several times) and in the right lighting.

4. One major issue I've started to notice is that when I'm typing, no text comes on the screen. The only fix is a reboot. I thought it was just only for the stock keyboard, but i installed Swift Key and encountered the same issue and it just happened with Swype today. Not sure if this is an isolated issue. If so, the unit can be replaced with a working one.

5. As with others, the slow battery charge is problematic. If I leave work and it's at 50%, although it's on the car charger, by the time I pull into my driveway, it's only gone up by 10% with a 20-25 minute drive. For it to be fully charged, I've got to keep it on the charger for another 4 hours without any type of activity.

Buut, despite the above, I'm enjoying my new phone and haven't had to "customize" it at all - yet.

The skow charging i have pinpointed the problem. Use your original equipment. Open your settings and see if it says charging(usb). If it says that then your chord is faulty(unless you have it plugged into a usb port). It should say charging(AC) if you have it plugged into an outlet.
