Is there a way backup my phone (contacts, pictures etc) to my computer.?
Depending on which basic phone you have (it may not be compatible), you could try bitpim software:

If your phone has an SD card you can backup to the card and then remove the card from the phone and copy into a new folder on your computer. Also smartphones will transfer very nicely with their USB cable and if the phone has Bluetooth you can transfer to most computers and do a backup.
