Why don't notifications work on the lock screen?

Have had phone for a few days. Occasionally SMS notifications appear over locked screen, but usually not. The LED worked once. The various permissions are set up correctly - it does work sometimes.The various scenarios:

1. No notification (80% of the time)

2. Works as designed (rarely)

3. Screen notifi but no sound (rarely)

4. Sound but no screen (rarely)

5. LED but nothing else (once); only time LED has worked

Any ideas? Thanks. I only have a week to fix it before returning for refund.

You might want to try toggling (or check to see if selected) notifications marked as sensitive.

First, make sure that your phone is set to show notifications on your lock screen:

Open your device's Settings app
Touch Sound & notification.
Touch When device is locked and choose Show all notification content.

Then, choose which apps to mark as sensitive:

On the same "Sound & notifications" screen, touch App notifications.
Touch an app.
Switch on Hide sensitive content.

Make sure that your messaging app is not selected.

I'm using Verizon's Messaging+. Thanks for the suggestions; I'm trying toggling options to see if that works. Looked up other SMS apps and may try one (or several).

Ok. Many of the verizon apps do not work correctly on the nexus devices (5x and 6p) since they are not officially listed as certified devices in the verizon system. Until the devices are certified on the verizon network, the verizon apps may not work correctly.
