4G data plans for mobile devices.

I am looking forward to many of the 4G phones coming out, but my concern is the contracts and pricing of 4G data plans on the devices. I don't live in an area that receives 4G, and I doubt it will anytime soon.

Am I allowed to keep the phone on a 3G data plan to avoid having to pay for a 4G data plan I wont be able to access?

I seriously doubt it.   If you could do what you're suggesting, people who live in a 4G area would go to a non-4G (say where grandma lives) area and buy the phone, using grandmas address, and then go to the 4G area and have free 4G sevice.

This same question came up when Sprint released the 4G EVO.  Sprint said if you have a 4G capable phone, you pay for 4G sevice, no matter where you live.
