ATT LTE vs Verizon LTE speeds

So my buddy came over to me with his Ipad 3 (or new Ipad) and was touting off his connection speed. with 3 bars he was getting 23MBS download. On my Verizon with 4 bars i was getting 12MBS download. The highest i have ever reached was 14mbs. Are we being capped or is ATT's speed just better?

There are less users on the ATT LTE network?

And once the iphone 5 hits, LTE speeds will be slower on both networks!

Also, in the case above, it may also depend on distance to the respective towers, if you are nearer an AT&T one, speeds would potentially be faster anyway.

I think that Ann is hitting the nail on the head.  I have noticed this, too, as I have an LTE tablet on VZW and LTE smartphones on AT&T.  I usually get around 10 Mbps on the VZW tablet and 20-30 Mbps on my AT&T phones.

On XDA, there was a thread of people posting screenshots of speedtests done on the various networks.  AT&T users in Dallas in December of 2011 were getting around 60 Mbps.  This was close to when LTE first went live in Dallas and of course, not as many AT&T users had LTE handsets at the time.  I doubt that those Dallas users get that level of speed now.

When one of my co-workers first got the Thunderbolt, I saw around 20 Mbps on VZW in March/April 2011.

In speed tests, I used to get upwards of 30, 40 and occasionally 50 mbps download speeds during the first six months of LTE in my area at certain locations in network. Now I see the expected speeds published by Verizon Wireless of 10-15 mbps and occasionally see 20-30 mbps download.

I would say for now AT&T's LTE speeds are better, but that's mostly due to the fact there are so few AT&T LTE phone's out there VS verizon. After the iphone 5 I think verizon will get hit very hard and that's why I think they killed unlimited data. AT&T will be hit hard as well, but I think them seeing first hand what this "phone" can and has done to there network. They won't want bad press on the same thing for the 2nd time and risk even more going to verizon.

Any way if I did not have unlimited data any more, I would likely go back to AT&T, becuase of the cost of the share every thing plan's and higher LTE speeds of AT&T + way better 3G.
