Can I keep unlimited data on the Device Payment Plan?

So i read online that if you grandfathered the unlimited data plan, you would be able to keep it and upgrade your phone by using the device payment plan. yknow the one where you pay the unsubsidized price of the phone in  12 installments and charging you $2 per installment. I went to several verizon stores asking about this and they all told me the same thing "i dont know what youre talking about but if you do upgrade your phone by paying the full price in installments, you will lose your unlimited data". After hearing that i asked several online specialist at verizon and they said i would be able to keep it. So what's the deal here? will i keep my data plan or lose it?

@patterswong,

I apologize for the conflicting information you have been given! Let's get this cleared up.

If you already have unlimited data and you purchase the phone at full retail you can keep the unlimited data plan. You do have the option of using the Device Payment Plan http://vz.to/ZILXBT to spread the retail cost over 12 months. Do so will allow you to keep the unlimited data plan. Please keep in mind that this is only offered at direct VZW stores http://bit.ly/3SdsA.

This is what many are told when they try to buy on the device payment plan. My local store even went so far as to say if I bought as I did at full price I would lose it as well.  They said going from a 3G device to a 4 G device also was going to make me lose unlimited. You see verizon is using any means to get the unlimited data off the grandfathered customers.

You also tell them after you purchase to do a complete printout of your plan, this way you can check any changes that were done against your last invoice. Bring the invoice with you to compare.

By the way its the Edge program where you lose unlimited. Of course the store people are pushing that over the device payment plan.

The link above is just one of many that state you do not lose unlimited.

I want to say that yesterday my mother in law went to the corporate store where we live. I went in with her and I told a nice young girl and a young guy that she wanted to get a new iPhone to replace her old droid. I mentioned the device payment plan for her, she did not want that she wanted to pay full price to keep her unlimited data. However the girl at the store said "What device payment plan" the young guy said he knew about it but it was for tablet purchases. I popped out my tablet and showed the web page from verizon where it said it was for phones and tablets.

The girl was amazed, since she said I was told tablets only. Remember first it was she knew nothing about it. In any case I informed the guy that I wanted a printout showing no change other than the 3g to 4g provision. He was a great guy, did the transaction in about 15 minutes, did the printout, compared the two all was well. He also said go on my verizon and see that unlimited was still there. We did all was well.

Another thing you have to remember is you have to pay the full tax up front and the first payment and the $2 finance charge at time of sale I think her first payment was about $110 total. Then you pay the next 11 months at about $55 but can payoff the balance at anytime.

I was very impressed with this young man. No hassle no arguments no problems.

Good Luck

Nice! It is good to hear of a smoother transaction compared to the previous stories about your last attempts at purchasing a device.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

You know I went in thinking it was going to be a hassle but I was so impressed I almost passed out in shock.

The manager and that girl from last time were absent. So it is in this case verizon hired a top notch representative.

Pleasant and knowledgeable, friendly and not pushing plan changes or trying to sell accessories it really was like the old days when they had people that actually knew their business.

Happy March 1, 2014
