Verizon knows what they're doing advertising 4G with Netflix. Two movies and you're cooked.
My Ubuntu laptop needs a lot of downloads to make it functional.
I missed half of the new V season opener the other night.
I'm up to 2.8 G used halfway through my month -( about on scheduale)
So I checked out the Verizon Wi-Fi Hotspots. Here's my experiences. I want to hear yours.
Stone Mountain Inn: No connection Period. just "Authenticating...." and a HUFF72 Error on time-out.
The Hotel staff didn't even know there was a Verizon Hotspot in the hotel. Forget the lobbies or grounds, these hotspots are only "in the rooms" as the fine print states, and the expensive restaurant
Barnes & Noble -Perimeter Atlanta- The speed was no better than the free "house" connection. Verizon notes that the speeds will vary by location.
Sam's Club: Near 4G speeds! So Wi-Fi may be a usefull option after all.

The OP is referring to the Verizon Wireless hotspots that Mobile Broadband customer receive free access to as a benfit to their plan.

"Theoretically " -my theory- is that the Verizon 4G Hotspots should be at 4G speeds. If I'm going to these places & buying $5.00 cups of coffee to be there, I don't want "Buffering...." signs poping up. That was the reason I went 4G. Otherwise I would have stayed on my UNLIMITED 3G plan.
I too asked the question: Why Verizon thought it was a worthwhile feature to put an entire, weekly-updated, TAB on the VZAccess Manager ; Wi-Fi Locations. Now I'm trying to find out what it's worth?
Here's some of what I want to know:
Are some business locations faster than others?
Is Verizon's Wi-Fi faster than the "house's"? (if they're not faster than the house's -usually ATT&T- why are they there?)
Is my Wi-Fi Usage really free? (I monitor the times I'm on & go to my account 24hrs later)
How fast are Verizon's Wi-Fi locations in 3G territory?
And any other useful & interresting experiences out there.
Sure, wi-fi would be an absolute must for video. When I first got my 3g modem a few years when I signed up with the 5 gig cap, I decided to download WOW. iT WAS 6 GIG BY ITSELF!!! i had no idea, LOL. The overages were a little steeper back then--my bill was $600!! Luckily for me, Verizon was generous to me, I thought and settled on a less onerous amount. You are right, you will definitely have to weigh unlimited 3g vs capped 4g. That would be no contest for me--3g. I would download your stuff at night when you have time.
Can't help you with experience--never heard of 4g hotspot. Must be nice. I've heard of 802.11 b/g/n where each letter is a different speed for both transmission and reception. I don't know if "n" is 4g; I doubt it. You would have to quantify both. Is there more than those, other posters? That might help the OP without having to test each site.
Up in 3G Territory. Starbucks is the only Verizon HotSpot in Gainesville GA, And naturaly nobody in the store knows about it. Verizon must sneak into these places and put bugs under the tables.
The signal is a good sub 1 mg speed, but serviceable, Watching a movie had few & short "Loading" 's. I'll post the numbers next.
