Why is data speed so slow! Our ABC affiliate did a news story on it. Can verizon not handle the congestion?

I also think they are overloaded. I spent close to an hour with a Verizon tech specialist. He couldn't figure why I couldn't get 5G anymore, which I was earlier in the year. And my 4G has been anywhere from 2 MB/sec to 12. Horrible! I used T-Mobile's 30-day test drive. I drove all over my city and county and I was getting 80 to 170 MB/sec. Attached are my speed readings from Verizon and T-Mobile. They were done just a few minutes apart.
I was paying Verizon $116 for a phone, watch and iPad. I ported to T-Mobile with a cost of $65 for a phone and three watches.
I was with Verizon since 1993 but I realized loyalty wasn't giving me much for my money. T-Mobile is great here, and 5G is available at about 170MB/sec if I want it. It uses a little more battery though.

Verizon is the carrier for voice, not data services with all that congestion. Things will improve once c band is deployed, but that will be awhile.
Unless you're getting a good rate on a loyalty/grandfathered plan, there's no reason to stick around.

In town it's slow. I get out of town and it's really fast. I've had speeds of 100mbps outside of town. Appears Verizon just can't handle the congestion in town. It's been like this for months. Our local news outlet contacted Verizon and did a story on it. Verizon was supposed to work on it. Why do we not have 5g in Jonesboro? There is some tmobile 5g coverage here.

Thank you for confirming. Are you currently in the affected area? What is the make and model of your phone? ~Roger
