Frequent 4G Disconnects in Oklahoma

I have noticed that my 4G LTE connection will randomly disconnect as others have also mentioned.  I'm located in North/Central Oklahoma.  This happened several times over the last few days. I am using the Pantech UML290 modem on Windows XP Service Pack 3. It's locked into 4G mode (only way I could connect).  I have all power-management disabled (both the USB hub and the modem itself).

Often, when I lose the connection, the VZAccess Manager software won't disable the "PANTECH UML290 WWAN" network connection listed in Windows' Network Connections panel.  Instead, it justs lists that the connection is unplugged (shows a red "X" next to the icon). On the other hand, when I intentionally disconnect by pressing the "Disconnect" button in VZAccess Manager, the "PANTECH UML290 WWAN" network connection is automatically disabled (meaning, it's grayed out).

When the random disconnects occur, I often can't reconnect. It will either show "Searching for LTE Network" or I'll get the infamous WMC604 error. At this point, it takes several reboots, several attempts at unplugging/replugging the modem, and several attempts at restarting VZAccess Manager to get things working again. In other words, getting back online requires more black magic than science.

Can someone please help?  This is quite annoying, to say the least.

Some additional questions:

(1) For anyone who has tried a panel antenna, did this improve your connection's reliability or just your speeds?  I have a rather weak signal (-89-92 dBm), but I do get one bar, and I can connect and stay connected for at most 3 hours (longest I've tested). My 4G speeds are 4 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up.

(2) Some have reported that they use the Nexaira Business Class II with the UML290. Has this improved your connection's reliability?

I'm considering getting both the antenna and the router, if they help me stay online. The speeds aren't a concern for me; faster is certainly better, but speed is nothing if I can't stay connected (and can't reliably reconnect).

Many thanks,

Damon

Thanks for the information.

Now if they can just release the MiFi 4510L.

How are you doing with the capped data plans? I will be using my main cable connection when at the house, all heavy traffic will happen through it. I will be mainly using this for business and while traveling. Just afraid it could be easy to go over the caps.

Thank you.

Since I'm the only one in my family that uses the internet every night, the 10 GB cap has not been an issue.

I listen to streaming music, watch occasional YouTube videos, send large e-mails, and make heavy use of remote desktop.  I average under 300 MB per day.  Note, however, that I don't watch movies, Hulu, etc; and I always use ad-blockers and Flash blockers in my browser.  Any large downloads I try to do on campus, but about half of those I just do over my 4G connection since it's more convenient. So, for me, as of yet, the cap has not been an issue.

But, I can't see the 10 GB plan being a viable home-internet option for a family of four (but, maybe 2-3).

Before I switched to 4G, I used a freeware program called NetMeter to see how much I actually used per month.  I used the program for about 2 weeks, and it projected that I would consume about 8 GB per month.  Fairly close prediction.

Give NetMeter a try for a few days and let it project your monthly usage: http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item23

Cheers,

Update: Disconnects have gotten WORSE over time. Used to be I'd get 1-3 disconnections per week.  Then it was 1-3 disconnections every 2-3 days.  More recently it's been 1-3 disconnections per day.  Today, it's 16 disconnections and counting.

Given that the disconnects are affecting a wide variery of devices, I would think Verizon would be able to fix this.  Pantech users have been waiting almost 5 months now for a real fix...

I swapped Pantech modem for LG.  I tried the panel anntenna on Pantech and unfortunately it made absolutely no difference in the disconnect problem or in signal strength (tried both ports.)  The LG seems a little more stable at times, but still has rampant disconnects, and also now has the Network not Registered error.

I wonder how the new MiFi device they just came out with is doing with connections? It has the Novatel chip in it, which in my opinion is much more superior in my opinion.

Been fighting disconnections all day. 16 and counting....  Here's a screenshot of my Inbox, which shows e-mails from my BC2 router each time it goes down and then back up. Same results with VZAM--drops the connection after 5-20 mins.

dmc, if you are still having signal issues in your area, please do not hesitate to contact us directly for additional troubleshooting. You can either PM me with the wireless number associated with your USB modem, and number and time where you can be reached when you have access to the device, and we will be happy to reach out to you directly.

Thank you, and we look forward to resolving this for you.

Damon,    do you still only have one bar in 4G?   You reported that in January.   If so,  I am very sure your 4G performance will be poorer than a strong 3G signal.   And,  I'm wondering why Verizon even bothered to offer anything in OK.   Not that I'm against  OK  -  but I think they needed to operate somewhere in the state to maintain their 700 MHz license for radio spectrum.   The FCC has rules about buying and not deploying services.    So, actually your 4G is being subsidized my those of us in NY and LA.    One must note that the population of the entire state of OK is less than half of New York City's 8+ million people in 300 square miles.    So you know where Verizon is going to focus their attention.

You may want to try my suggestion in the following post:

Good luck.

The disconnections have been significantly reduced <knocking on wood> by moving my panel antenna to the highest point in my attic. You can see pictures, and my discussion here (see the 5th post). Thanks VL600_Boston, you were right about my poor signal strength.  Still get ocassional disconnections (1-2 every 3-4 days), but this is tolerable.

Compared to before, the upload speed has increased quite a bit.

My guess is that as the trees grew out in the spring, my signal got progressively weaker. Hopefully, I won't need to keep moving the antenna higher...

Cheers,

Damon

I upgraded to the Droid Bionic last week. I saw the "4G" icon on day 1 and only a couple of flashes of it since.

I live in Shawnee which according to VZW is fully 4G covered. It doesn't matter whether I am in the house or outside somewhere 4G is just not coming up.

Are there issues with the 4G service in Central Oklahoma?

I can't say it's even fair to judge the phone's performance without the 4G network. I can run it on the WiFi but that seems kinda nuts when my PC is sitting right here.

3G'n it in Shawnee.
