Since Verizon is unwilling or unable to address this widespread, systemic

defect in its service, I have formed a FB group where customers can

document their experiences in a public forum. Please feel free to share

your story. I have no agenda other than forcing Verizon to acknowledge

this horrible, ongoing problem.

The FB Group is titled "Verizon Data Fee Abuse - Public Protest" ... here

is the link and here is the description:

www.facebook.com/VerizonDataFeeProtest

"Are you a current or former Verizon customer who has recently experienced

a huge and unexplained jump in smartphone data use fees? This page invites

customers to document their experiences with Verizon data fee abuse and

insane charges which in no way reflect their actual data usage. Verizon is

charging consumers 'overuse' fees for what appears to be a defective

product, and the company is doing nothing to address this problem. We as

customers are seeking an explanation and refunds for unfair 'excess data

use' charges. We do not believe the 'fixes' suggested by Verizon reps

because this is a systemic and widespread problem. Verizon cannot or will

not fix this faulty product but is happy to charge loyal customers

ever-higher fees for phantom data use. If a permanent fix is not

forthcoming by December 2014, we seek to be released from our Verizon

smartphone contracts and reimbursed for all inaccurate data charges."

1) Answer me this though. How would a phone thats OFF (as in powered DOWN) use cellular data???

2) This next bill and the one after that will be very telling. My son wont be getting his phone back until Jan 2 2015. Its OFF, not even going to get turned on until Jan 2 2015. I'm sure it will have data usage on it though.

1) the time on the log is not the time the data was used.  Many towers report usage at set intervals.  For example if you have a 3AM entry for 150MB, and the next entry is 9 AM for 1 MB , it is possible, even likely the data was used at 8:30 AM not the middle of the night.

2) no need to wait until Jan. Look at the online logs now on My Verizon and you will find your sons phone is not using any data, if truly off and in a drawer.

Make sure powered down really means powered down and not just sleep or standbye mode.

Don't underestimate how much more data a LTE device can use for the same browsing and app use over 3G. Don't believe me, put an LTE phone in 3G mode only by turning LTE off and use the phone that way for a few days. On LTE, it does not take much effort to use a gigabyte.

there may be a few users with data anomalies, but it is very hard to interpret that without everyone giving App data use.

I'm having the same issue.  I purchase a Samsung Galaxy s5 from Verizon and the usage charges have been ridiculous, and I'm clearly using wifi when the usage charges are occurring.

What was your previous phone? What apps are using data? How do you know you are clearly on WIFI? Remember the time stamp on the log usually do not tell you the time the data was used, see above.

Yes, my wife and I are having a similar issue with her iPhone 5c 8GB. We got our phones at the same time around 17 October, 2014. Since that time I have used 129.1 MB combine total all together with my Droid MAXX. And I have not used any data usage at all since 26 October, 2014. Yet my wife's phone keep on eating up huge chunks of data usage. Furthermore yes, I do know and understand, how to adjust the data usage settings, disabled apps, stop apps from running in the background, where to look to find which apps or settings are using data usage, and some forth.

Do any of you have CALLER NAME ID app? It was pushed to phones by VERIZON  in 4.2 update from what I understand this may be what's causing the usage. People are saying it doesn't use wifi at all and is always sucking data much to verizon delight. They sent it through and if you inadvertently accepted it's terms and conditions along with all the bs you have to accept to get your phone up and running after an update you let verizon in to take all the data they want to charge you for. Basically you let the fox into the hen house.

Yes I know what you are talking about. I caught this before it could do any harm. In which case, I was shock that this kind of app was installed via the back door. No way will I allow any app that will not use any available Wi-Fi network connection remain on my phone!

is that CALLER NAME ID app on iPhones only or all Verizon phones?

EDIT: Just read that its on both flavors of phones. Nice.

It's nice if you have an unlimited data plan.

This is from another forum not Verizon's...

"Today I spoke with the Verizon rep I have been dealing with.

He has been following this since I originally started having this issue right after the phone released. Motorola has confirmed that this is a software bug affecting a select few Turbo's, they plan on having a software patch to correct this within a few weeks.

Essentially what is happening, according to Moto, is that when you connect to a wifi network after being on the cell network, the radios sometimes do not switch over to the wifi connection. Even the operating system does not see that this is happening, which is why some of us have seen such a huge discrepancy between data usage reported by the OS and the usage reported by verizon.

He did provide me the same temporary fix that you were provided. I will say that I have not noticed this issue again on my phone in the past few weeks so I have not been able to try the fix out myself.

My account was credited for the overages, if anyone else has this issue simply call verizon and they will do the same for you until the patch is released."
