NDIS Driver use with 4G ExpressCards or USB adapters?

I remember a ways back that you could install NDIS network drivers for a datacard and use it similarly to a WiFi connection.  This permitted the user to forgo the Verizon connection manager software and have the network connection established prior to logon.  This is preferred since some VPN clients authenticate with both machine and user credentials.

 

Does anyone have documentation on how this could be done with the more recent 4G datacards or USB adapters?
