I live in the urbanized area of DC and regularly my bars drop to zero -- calls are missed, VM takes a long (!) time to arrive (sometimes HOURS), and text is spotty. There shouldn't be ANY outages in this part of downtown DC -- I'm less than a mile from the White House. I turn to airplane mode, wait 15 seconds, and turn it back on -- VOILA, service returns for a while, and then it will disappear again. Verizon has reset my software and Apple says it's not my phone. ARGH!!!

Resolution Update: By partnering with support, we were able to confirm that the calling issue mentioned in this post is primarily occurring indoors. If others encounter similar problems with call quality indoors, common factors can include building material, external barriers (such as trees or terrain), and line of sight to our cell sites.
For anyone facing a similar issue now, we recommend adding our Wi-Fi Calling feature, which allows customers the ability to make and receive calls over Wi-Fi in areas with weak coverage: https://www.verizon.com/support/wifi-calling-faqs/

Is your iPhone an older model, which can't be upgraded to the latest iOS? If so, sounds like it's time to buy a new phone because either you're not getting the full iPhone experience, or something in the hardware is going out.
I'm not a Verizon employee, just another customer trying to help.
