Verizon 4G LTE 700 MHz Interference at Mexican Border San Diego

We're in San Diego and near the Mexico border and experiencing spotty cell service. How can we avoid the dropped calls, failure to connect, and spotty data service? And how far inland is cell service effected by interference from the new wireless operator in Mexico, Altan Redes? The company launched wireless service last month on 4G LTE 700 MHz the same frequency .Verizon 4G LTE uses.

We use wi-fi calling when we have access to wi-fi networks but what's the point of having a cell phone if your limited to using in it areas with w-fi coverage.

I have the same issue and do believe that Verizon's claim of being the most reliable network is no longer valid.  The type of service I have been receiving for the past month certainly calls for some sort of massive discount since my phone works less and less.

What is Verizon trying to do to fix this problem?

Oh my gosh!!! Thank you, I agree!!!

same issue!!

I live in El Paso Texas, a borderland City.

The frustration is that Mexico put up towers at multiple new sites creating the interference, with the Verizon US tower.  El Pasosns are frustrated, but because the Verizon Director of Communications, Steve Van Dinter, said they were working with the FCC fits resolution. KFOX TV, Wednesday, August 21, 2019.  Story by David Cross.

This has been going on since before August 21, 2019.  I have no 3g our 4g, I barely have one bar that I'm working with and sometimes more often then not, NO SERVICE!  I live North of I10, closer to our International Airport than the Border.

My bill is almost $200.00 per month.  I only agreed to that because Verizon was that very best, with coverage everywhere!  Now they are not even close to PCS or Cricket in El Paso.  And, my son just upgraded his cellphone and owes on it, so we can't just drop our service.

Verizon provided me a ticket number to escalate my situation, this is the first message I received.

"Free Verizon Msg: Your ticket is assigned and being worked. Thank you for your patience. Next update within 24hrs."

2nd message

Free Verizon Msg: The review of your reported service issue is complete. Please click the link to see more details http://vzw.com/signalNE

A video so that I can get a box to better my signal.  First of all that does not help my situation in my car, because my car does not have WiFi!!! At home it will not work for me because you have to have a high speed internet and other major pieces,

Thus is all a bandaid fix!!!  Not acceptable!!!!  If I were late on my payment, I bet Verizon would drop my family in a secon!!!!

This is all while, I continue to receive promotional upgrades to our phones.  So why would I upgrade from a 7plus to the X or better, if I can't even use the 200.00 service I'm already paying for?

Verizon step up!! You need to make this right for El Paso Texas, your customers!!!

Good morning, Jack_Sprat. It's important to stay connected, so I understand your concern when you have signal issues. A wireless operator in Mexico, Altan, launched service along the border recently in the same spectrum band as Verizon. This is causing interference for some of our wireless customers - especially those closest to the border. We are working with the FCC, the Mexican Government and Altan to resolve this issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, we have added capacity to our network to minimize the impact to our customers. Does this provide clarity?

Tracy and VZW do you have any updates? This issue has been going on since at least August, and it's already October. Who is VZW working with at the FCC, Mexican government, and other U.S. agencies? Is VZW in direct contact with the Mexican government and the equivalent of the FCC in Mexico? And with Atlan stating that it's an intergovernmental issue and not one to be settled by cellular network providers what are your next steps in resolving the issue?

VZW says Mexican wireless phone provider, Altan, launched service along the border same spectrum band as Verizon (4G LTE 700 MHz) causing interference and that they are working with the FCC, the Mexican Government, and Altan to resolve this issue. However, Altán officials, have said they are deploying and operating its network in strict compliance with the obligations of its (Mexican) concession and the radiation protocols in force with the United States and the issue is one to be settled by government agencies, and not by cellular network providers.

I'm in Oregon  and having trouble doing anything on my phone. I'm a sports coach and need to be able to contact my team plus my family. I think the problem is expanding to beyond those near Mexico. Everyone at my school who has verizon can't do anything.

@ts161  , There is one report of a Verizon outage in Oregon 5 hours ago on https://downdetector.com/status/verizon/

If it were related to the Mexico issue I would think there would be a LOT more reports/complaints up the coast.

Service concerns are not what we want for you as we understand how the importance of communication. Let's see what we can do. What's a zip code associated with the problem area? How far do you have to travel for services to improve? Provide us with specific details about your experience with calls, texts, and data.

Thanks, Corey. Service drops when making calls or shortly after they connect, incoming calls go to voicemail without ringing, and data is spotty or nonexistent. For zip codes please check 92119, 92120, 92115, 92103, 92154, and 92173. Or look at Interstate 8 and Interstate 805, Interstate 8 and Interstate 163, Interstate 5 and State Route 905, and State Route 94 and State Route 905.

The problem is not being able to make or receive calls or use data service unless the phone is connected to wi-fi. Unless we're at home, work, or at other locations with good wi-fi phones work about as well as trying to make a phone call with a banana. Except the banana works better than our Verizon cell phone and makes a nutritious snack.

Signal strength ranges from  -118dBm 22 asu to  -112dBm 28 asu.

The problem has been going on since August, and it's now October. Do we need to find a company like T Mobile that's outside the 700 Mhz range? Everyone we've talked to a VZW says they don't have an update or expected resolution date and keep saying that they are working to resolve the issues.

fredtheocelot, we truly value your loyalty and we never want to see you go. Making sure you have reliable service is important. We do want to let you know that Altan, a wireless operator in Mexico, recently launched service along the border using the same spectrum band as Verizon. This is causing interference for some of our wireless customers -especially those closest to the US/Mexico border. This may impact Voice, SMS/MMS, and Data services. Our Network team is aware of the concern and is working on a fix to resolve this matter.

how are you working on a fix? can you specify how that is going to happen? i'm 50 yards away from a Verizon Cell Tower and i've been having problems since August. Unless you are install 5 G near 92158? Basically from what i gathered is Mexico said go Pound sand we arent going to spend a lot of money for your problem, and Verizon cant do anything about it?

on other great news Verizon Technical support just told me they are getting rid of 1x and 3g because it cost to much. and sometimes thats the only reception i get in San  Diego Because of the interferance with Mexico. So Basically Southern States are going to be messed up. You either have 4G or you dont have reception is what i was told.

Good morning, fookoff96.We certainly understand the frustration; unfortunately, it is a difficult situation since the interference is being caused by a carrier outside the United States.

Please know our teams are working every possible angle to address this issue. Talks continue with the highest levels of the United States government and our network team is making regular adjustments to the network to help mitigate the issue in the interim. Does this provide clarity?

Unfortunately repeating the answer of "we are trying to work on it and it is out of our control" is not very useful, nor does it provide any clarity.

The issue for Verizon users in El Paso and other affected border cities is not WHAT is happening to cause the problem but rather WHAT is VERIZON going to do to take care of its customers. So far, what Verizon is NOT doing is:

1 - Fix the problem outright

2 - Provide a CURRENT update to show customers that it is a priority and allow us to see any progress

3 - Provide a timeline of when it might work again

4 - Give a credit on the bills for the loss of use of a service that was paid for

Essentially, all that Verizon has done is repeat over and over that it is due to a wireless carrier in Mexico, Not our fault!!  Truly, we get that. The real problem goes far beyond the ability or authority of online customer service agents to adequately respond. As a result we hear the same not-helpful statements over and over.

Let's do some real talk then: At what point do we all cut ties with Verizon and pick up Sprint, AT&T or T-Mobile?

We would never want to see you leave us aj80. We understand your frustration. If we had a different answer to share, we would be anxious to provide it. Please know that we are working with the FCC to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Do you have Wi-Fi available in your home? Have you tried Wi-Fi calling by chance?

I agree that Verizon needs to provide regular updates on their progress, a timeline for resolution,  and credit bills until it's resolved. They need a  better solutions than suggesting wi-fi calling and network extenders. The point of mobile phone service is that it's mobile. Being limited to wi-fi calling doesn't solve the issue especially in rural areas with poor or no internet service. Well, I can call you from work, from home, or some random place with wi-fi or hey maybe there's a payphone nearby.

Verizon doesn't have a solution so they keep repeating the same message. Altan is causing interference,  it's not our fault but we're sorry, have you tried wi-fi calling,  oh and we're sorry but have no update and haven't made any progress on solving this.

T-mobile may be the best company to switch too since AT&T uses some of the 700 mhz frequency. Not sure what frequency Sprint is on.

This thread and its lack of resolution has clinched it. I'm switching my company's service to T-Mobile today.
