Verizon Extender Problems

We have subpar signal strength in our neighborhood. Verizon has confirmed this. There are not enough towers in the area to handle the amount of cell service required. Verizon sent us an extender free of charge. I have connected it to our Xfinity modem/router. Our phones appear to be connected when we dial #48. However, we have the worst cell service still. Our phones will just randomly lose connection and drop. Carrying on a conversation is a joke. We drop calls constantly throughout the house. It's terrible. Is there something wrong with this extender? I've heard Verizon doesn't own the same towers anymore and that is why the service has gotten horrible over the past 5 years or so. Has anyone else had this issue and know how to fix? Do we need to find another provider? Used to be the best in coverage and never dropped a call ever. Now I drop constantly in my own home! Anyone have any advice?
