Why is my jetpack using so much data?

I purchased a Jetpack Oct 17, 2013 - yesterday !  I was told we had 5MG to use, that we would never use it all in a month.  WELL by 11:00pm I received an email that we had used 90% already.  What the heck is going on ?????  My son watched a movie and did normal stuff on his phone that he has always through our wireless internet - Wifi with Armstrong.  We had to add this for a different location where Armstrong does not have service.  Not at all happy with Verizon right now.  Ready to cancel phones and call !

mawalls52, congratulations on your recent purchase of a jetpack device. I'm sorry to hear that you considering canceling your service. We definitely don't want you to go. You have a 14 day Worry Free Guarantee to return/exchange your device for any reason. However, let's give you a better understanding of how data usage is debited from your allowance. Streaming music, videos, and movies use large amounts of data allowance. Did you view your data sessions online at My Verizon? http://bit.ly/xB4iTc

Do a search in the jetpack forum and you will find MANY threads on data overage complaints. Gigs and Gigs of usage when nothing's connected, when it's turned OFF, and more. But  if you weren't tallying data usage on your wi-fi, you might be surprised just how much data movies can suck down. And yes, downloading and streaming movies CAN blow through 5 gigs in a matter of days, if not hours. Some have said  the problem  was fixed with new SIMh cards. That's possible, since SIM cards are what determine what account data is logged and billed to. If there is an error in the data on the SIM, then you may be getting billed erroneously for someone else's data.

I personally would stay away from VZW's hotspot devices, there seem to be way too many data and accounting issues with these things. I-Phones seem to have data overage issues too.

Do you know what your billing cycle date ended up as? It is possible that the message you received is more related to the partial month you have when starting the service. When you get charged for a partial month's service and then the next full month. For the three days, you only get partial amount for the data allowance. For example if your billing cycle date in 20th, you will be charged for three days and have 5 GB ÷ 30 days to get the per day GB allowance. For three days, you would have 0.5 GB allowed on your plan.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Why are you "VERIZON" not admitting to the overage problem and showing how to fix the problem?????

Watching or downloading a movie over 4G or any cellular data will soak up a lot of data.  I bought a movie on itunes and watched it on my tablet.  In "standard definition" that 1 movie soaked up 2GB of data.  iTunes did show that the movie was 1.9GB in size.  So if you have a 5GB limit per month, don't watch, stream or download movies/videos/music.  If you don't know how much data you use every month, how can you buy a 5GB a month plan?

Hey there angirn3,

I'm sorry to hear you're having some issues as well. If you're having a problem, I'm on the scene to fix it. Our Jetpacks are great devices and currently there are no known issues as far as them causing overages. Which make and model Jetpack do you have? Do you have a secure password set up on it? Do you turn it off when not in use? Describe how you use the Jetpack on a daily basis. Please provide additional details so I can better assist.

If you have a windows 8 laptop, you can right-click on your wireless connection and "Set as Metered Connection", this will show exactly how much data your laptop uses (including windows updates, ect.)  Then you can reset the counter each month.  I have yet to go over the 5GB limit on my jetpack,  I get a txt from verizon when it's close.  I turned off windows updates and set my antivirus to update when I tell it to so I don't waste data on my jetpack.  Also I don't stream netflix on the jetpack, it can use up a lot of data after just a couple of TV episodes.

This has been a problem since day one, Overage fees applied and having to increase GIG. Sims card changed, Jet Pack changed and still the same increase in gig. but guess what!! when I turned off the Jet Pack and used my Phone Hot spot i use hardly any Data mmmm.......  You say there are no current issues, but all i read are issues with increased data on jet pack. AGAIN you are not fixing a problem because you refuse to see it!!!!
