You could borrow a phone from a friend, buy a gently used one off ebay or swappa (just ensure it's Verizon branded with a clean ESN), or purchase it elsewhere (again, just ensure it's Verizon branded with a clean ESN). If you happen to have the double-the-date promo from 2012, you'll need to keep a 4G phone on the line or you'll lose the promotion.

You can get any Verizon compatible phone from any source you want, WalMart, EBay, neighbor, etc. and have it activated on your line.

elliew, thanks for helping us support lousbarn with information regarding activating an alternate phone on their wireless line. Insurance covers devices that are lost, stolen, or damaged http://vz.to/Prh6pa However, if you acquire a device from a third party, that device can be activated online at My Verizon. Here's some information and the steps on how to activate an alternate device online here: http://vz.to/Q0nvYH
