Evidently, the topic I was posting to earlier was closed for further comments before I had a chance to post my findings. That topic is https://community.verizon.com/t5/5G-Home-Internet/5G-Gateway-ASK-NCQ1338-Passthrough-Not-Working-Rel...
I got a response from a developer for DD-WRT and he told me that MSS clamping is on by default in DD-WRT. He thought based on reading the Verizon thread that all I would need to do is adjust the MTU setting on the WAN interface.
I switched my Verizon gateway back to passthrough mode and verified that my troubles still existed. The Bank of America website is my go-to for demonstrating the issue. In passthrough mode, the site will not load properly as a lot of the secondary items necessary for the page like CSS files, and images timeout and never get loaded.
I was working on my laptop which is connected via wi-fi to my DD-WRT router (Netgear Nighthawk XR500). I set the MTU on the WAN interface from "Auto" to "Manual" and set the value to 1492. Immediately, the BofA website loaded properly as well as all the others I was having trouble loading.
However, later I went and started working on my desktop PC which uses ethernet for connecting to the router. That PC still had problems loading the sites and I ended up having to set the MTU in DD-WRT down to 1458 in order to get things to load consistently and properly. Not sure why there is a difference between the hard-wired and the wi-fi situation, but all the computers so far seem to be happy now.
I found also when testing, I needed to always try to open BofA in a private browser window. Even though I was emptying the cache between each attempt, there were still cases where it did/didn't appear to load properly.
So, now that seems to be a valid workaround for me.
