Connectivity and speed

My husband and I switched to Verizon Gateway because we'd heard good things about the service and we were tired of dealing with Cox. Everything was fine for the first couple of months, but now, all of a sudden, as of the last week or so, our connection keeps dropping in and out, speeds are extremely slow (we're paying for 300 Mbps, sometimes as low as 1 Mbps, both download and upload!). After a couple of hours on the phone with support, the only thing they did was drop our rate to half for the next year? But, why would we even want to pay half, for a connection that's inconsistent and slower than dial-up? Seriously? Toward the end of my call to support I was told that there was an issue on Verizon's end (they didn't say if it was software, hardware, or something else), and that it would be resolved "in a few days". Well, it's been "a few days" and things are getting worse. Lots of buffering when trying to stream on our TV, losing the internet connection entirely for several minutes at a time, then when there is a connection, it's so slow that we can't download or upload anything. We use the internet for both work and pleasure, so it's a necessity, not just a frill. If we don't get the steady connectivity and speed back that we had before this nonsense, we're going to have to switch to yet another internet service. What the heck  is going on?
