Verizon gateway not using correct DNS addresses

I have a Verizon gateway, model XCI55AX. Wifi is disabled on my Verizon gateway and I do not want to use it for wifi.
Home wifi is configured on a Google router plugged into the Verizon gateway via ethernet cable. The Google router is setup to use the DNS addresses for OpenDNS.
For some reason, when connected to my wifi it is NOT using the DNS settings of my Google router, it is using the Verizon Gateway DNS routers.
I did not have this issue when I used my old Cox router. Anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? Same exact setup as I had with my Cox device and that would use the correct DNS addresses configured on my Google router. (I do not want to set the OpenDNS addresses on the Verizon Gateway because of some other hardware I have configured.)
I have already:
Verified OpenDNS is using the correct IP address for my network
Cleared my cache
Rebooted Verizon gateway
Rebooted Google router

Use IP passthrough, the manual will have how to set this up.
