Do I really need to change out my router for Fios to work?

I switched to Verizon FioS a few years ago and made sure that it would work with my new third party router ( NetGear Nighthawk AC1900).  A Verizon technician installed the Verizon ONT box in the basement, and I've placed the router  upstairs (2nd floor) so there is a floor in between. It worked for like a year and then the internet connection dropping would happen daily. It's gotten so frustrating that important work calls get dropped several times during the hour. Tonight, the internet just stopped working for a few minutes in the evening. I've tried rebooting the router each time and contacting Verizon. Verizon claims the service is fine on their end, but the issue is the third party router.

Do I really need to purchase/rent the Verizon router? Is there anything I can do with my current router?

Thanks!
