Can't enter my account number when adding an account

I recently bought a phone, in preparation to start a plan with verizon, and now I need to make a payment for it. I just got my bill in the mail, and it has an account number on it. When I sign into the verizon website, it tells me I'm signed in as a guest and that I need to add an account to complete my profile. But the site doesn't recognize the account number from my bill, it just leaves the fill-in box in red and the continue button in grey. I called customer service multiple times but never connected to an actual employee, and the automatic system kept disconnecting the calls; the help pop up on the site just directs me back to the customer service number. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, I just want to pay my bills on time
