I recently switched carriers and updated to a new device (Metro by T-Mobile to Verizon: iPhone 12 to iPhone 14 Plus). I wanted my number ported over to Verizon but noticed it keeps saying "Activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again." I can text and make calls but can't receive texts in a group chat, or rather, I can't see them. For some reason, I can only see incoming texts from one person in a certain group chat. After several calls, I was informed by Metro that the port isn't complete and that I'd have to call Verizon. Metro also mentioned that I can't cancel my service with them (Metro) until the port is complete.

Why does this happen? I just need to be able to communicate with my team at work and it's frustrating that switching carriers and upgrading to a new phone isn't going smoothly at all.
