How do I bypass VZAccess Manager and use a Windows Internet connection?

I am a new Verizon customer. My computer OS is Windows XP SP3. I have a Novatel 551L USB modem.

When I received the modem, I used the disk that accompanied it to set up VZAccess Manager. I have decided I do not want to use this program but want to use a Win XP Internet Connection instead.

I followed the instructions at

http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-145624/

using these parameters:

User name: <10-digit mobile number>@vzw3g.com

Password:  vzw

and both “#777” and “777” as the number to dial. Both result in the error message:

Error 777: The connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order.

I found a similar set of instructions with these parameters at

https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/39640#39640

Phone number is #777

The username is yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com

The password is vzw3g.com

This didn’t work either – same error message.

I did not uninstall VZAccess Manager. Is that a must do for a DUNS to work?

Thank you for any help.

Try changing the phone number to *99***3#

Leave the username and password blank.

Also try leaving the phone number blank too.

You may have to reboot everything and give it time to connect.

To my knowledge you must use the VZAM software if you want to connect with a USB modem.  I have never gotten them to work any other way.

Dear John,

Thank you for responding to my query. Unfortunately your answer was too imprecise to be correct. I have been connecting to the Internet for 6 years using a USB modem and until this last month, I have not had VZAccess Manager on my computer. Granted my isp was not Verizon nor was my modem the Novatel 551L. That said, I am pretty sure that VZAM is nothing more than a piece of software that uses specific data which it passes through the 551L to establish an Internet connection, data that includes, but may not be limited to, 1) The access number to the Verizon tower, 2) My account number, 3) The password for my account.

If this is not the arrangement, perhaps you, or someone else, can explain why this is not how a connection to a Verizon tower is accomplished with the 551L.

I look forward to hearing from you and again, thank you for taking the time to respond.

Dear 7d18n1

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I implemented your suggestion backwards (minimalist theory). No phone number, username or password.

That didn’t work and resulted in a 638 Error message.

So, I added your suggested phone number, *99***3# with no username or password and

THAT WORKED!

I can now boot up my computer and it does NOT automatically open an Internet connection

AND

Then I can click on any Internet shortcut on my computer and the connection opens and puts me on the chosen website.

I REALLY appreciate your help.

Respectfully yours,
