Hum device will not hold charge

Is this typical that you must drive with the device plugged into constant power and then if the outlet is not constant hot the devices drains all battery within 6 hours?  Does not seem to be worth replacing.

The issue began within a few weeks of installing. There is no damage. I spoke with a rep at the Verizon store and he said the warranty was only 90 days. Seems convenient. I certainly do not plan to use the device with it plugged into charge not to mention the fact that blue tooth does not function when plugged in
