Numbers on my home screen disappear and are replaced with white square boxes. Any ideas,

Sounds like the device is suffering from a temporary problem.

First steps should be to reset the jetpack with a simple reboot.  Next step would be to attempt to restore the defaults by finding the reset button under the back cover.
