I've recently switched to VZW Galaxy S5 from Sprint, and so far I'm pretty satisfied with the new service. I am having problems in one area though. I have an OpenVPN access server set up on my home network which I connect to using the OpenVPN Connect Android app for access to my home network resources on my phone. I had no problem at all with it on Sprint, but when I try using it on my new phone it will connect and work fine for a few seconds, then it seems like the mobile data connection resets, the VPN disconnects, my SIP app disconnects, the Steam app disconnects then a few seconds later they all reconnect again. Then a second or two after that they all disconnect again, reconnect, disconnect, etc. I can use the VPN connection for the few seconds it's connected but obviously the constant disconnect/reconnect makes it not very useful. Does VZW interfere with VPN connections?

Davel23,
I am so sorry you are having issues with staying connected to your VPN. We do not interfere with VPN's so it is very odd that yours is not working. Did you set up your VPN in your device settings? Go to Settings>More networks>VPN

I've found several people on the OpenVPN forums having a similar problem. Seems like it's not limited to VZW. Thanks for the reply anyway.

Is Verizon going to acknowledge this and provide a resolution. I have setup a VPN on windows and Linux. ppp and l2tp. I have a note 2 personal phone and a casio gzone company phone that works just fine. We have two employees one that has a note3 and one that has a s5 that connect to the vpn (either one on either os) it works for about 10 seconds and then disconnects them. My wife has a s4 that also disconnects. The phones that disconnect work fine over a wireless network but not on the cellular network. What gives!?!

I'm not sure what to think now. Most of the people reporting a problem over on the OpenVPN forum are indeed using Verizon, but there's at least one who is using a different cell provider and also having the same problem.

I opened a case with Verizon last night. This problem appears to be with the Galaxy S 4 S 5 and the Galaxy Note 3. I would imagine probably the newer Galaxy Tabs also. It doesn't matter what VPN you use or if windows or linux. It actually stays connected on my server 2008 rc2 machine but stops routing information as soon as you try to access anything on the network. Verizon has to know about this. It looks like it is a problem between the translation between ipv4 and ipv6 that the newer devices use. Any comments Verizon?

It may be an issue with Android 4.4. I have found several reports of VPN problems with this version.

But Seriously. How many of these types of phones has Verizon sold and none of them will work with any type of VPN (at least that I have found). That is like buying a brand new car and everything works but you cant use the cruise control. You wouldn't tolerate that for a minute on your new car. Very frustrating for us IT guys. And why cant Verizon just come out and say. Yea, we have a problem and we are working on it.

Having the same problem, Galazy note3 with openvpn connect.. it connects just fine but as soon as i start to access any data the disconnect/reconnect starts, Don't remember having this issue prior to upgrading to 4.4.2...
I do notice in my openvpn server log that the ip address of the note3 changes every time it reconnects.. Just to be sure i opened www.whatmyip.org, start openvpn and checked my ip. Once i access data the disconnect happened, i checked my ip again the confirmed that i had a totally new ip address..

Having same issue on 4G network only with MotoX Dev edition. Turned 4G off and no issues on 3G and no issues on WiFi. I can usually run speed test on speedtest.net app and make it disconnect every time.

decyphex,
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that you are having these kind of troubles with your MotoX. That does seem a little odd that you are running fine with 3G. One thing that I would like for you to try is to power the device off and then remove the sim card from the device for a good 10-15 seconds http://vz.to/1msd4vs. Then place the sim card back into the phone and power it back up like normal and then re-test. Please keep us posted.

Hello Kevin,
This had no effect on the issue, as I suspected. So what we are dealing with here is either the 4G network's inability to handle this traffic correctly or we are dealing with an android bug. However, I will tell you that I had this issue with 4.4.2 and just recently updated to 4.4.4 OTA and still experience the same thing.

On a second note, I tried the same scenario with a Motorola Droid Mini and the same symptoms were observed. The motoX and droid mini are both stock and un-tampered with.

decyphex,
Thanks so much for trying those steps on both of your devices. This does seem a little odd. Can you please provide me with the zip code that you are in that is having the trouble with the 4G service? Another thing that I would suggest on trying is to run both of the phones in Safe mode. This will block out any 3rd party applications. These are the steps for the Moto X: http://vz.to/1nbFKUf There here are the steps to place the Droid Mini in Safe Mode: http://vz.to/1fFtjfd Please keep us posted.

I'm having this issue in zip code 12563 and surrounding areas. Silly question, if safe mode blocks out 3rd party applications, how are we supposed to use OpenVPN Connect?

Good question Dave123. Running safe mode helps eliminate problematic applications on your device that may be causing issues with certain functionalities and software. I show you should have coverage in this area. Are issues inside or outside?

KinquanaH_VZw and KevinR_VZw,
Do you even understand what openVPN is? It's an app. Safe mode disables third party apps, which means openVPN would get disabled. There is also no point in asking what Davel23's coverage is like, as there are several of us on here experiencing the same issue. Could you either provide some USEFUL information or find someone else in your company to reply with something useful?
Btw, I am experiencing the issue in zip code 19709.

Tell me about it @Davel23. I just want to share what I've discovered so far. I'm pretty experienced with home networking but setting up a VPN is pretty new to me.
I have a OpenVPN server running on my home router. I am using a Moto X running Android 4.4.4 (I'm aware that there were some VPN bugs with 4.4.x with expected bugfixes "coming soon"). I also have set up my routing tables to route all traffic through my WAN (Comcast) connection at home.
I can connect to the server over WiFi both locally at my house and at a remote location (hotel). I can transfer files, ping my other machines, run speed tests, etc with NO problem. If I try to connect to this server over Verizon's 4G connection, the connection will fail once I try any sort of data transmission like a speed test on Ookla.
Another discovery through some testing was that if I do split-tunneling, which from what I understand doesn't force all traffic through my home WAN, I can do a file transfer from one of my home machines with no problems (a Windows shared folder).
I think the problem lies either with our phones being assigned a private IP address on the 10.x.x.x subnet and this isn't routed nicely on VZW's end. If it's not that, is it maybe a Android 4.4.x bug? I should reactivate my old Android and try it.
