I currently have a Droid X that I use as my daily phone. There are times when I would like to activate one of my older phones from Verizon to use when mountain biking, on the boat, etc. Is there a way to switch service from a currently activated phone to an older phone from the same provider, and back again?

yes this is possible. however, if you have insurance on your phone you will lose it by taking the phone off the plan. also if the old phone isnt smart phone you will run into hassles as the permissions don't transfer.

That is correct. Changing the devices can cause issues with your insurance feature if you do have insurance on your device. If you do not have insurance on your device, you can activate the phone you want to use at the time through the following steps:
- On the phone you want to activate, dial *228.
- Select option 1 when prompted.
- Wait to be prompted that the process is complete.
- Once complete, the device will power off and on (if it does not go through automatically complete manually).
- Once the device is back on, place a test call by dialing #832.
You can complete these same steps to activate the other device when you are ready to use it again.
