I'm looking to see how viable Google voice is for text messaging and got a question for you guys.
I don't want to incur charges if someone send sms to my Verizon number.
If I disable my SMS capability within my Verizon account, will I be able to get texts through Google Voice.
Or does my sms capability must be enabled in order for Google voice to work?
any help appreciated.

Yes you will still get them assuming you have a data connection. Google Voice doesn't support mms yet so that may be a deal breaker for some.

i'm pondering this option because, if i upgrade through a 3rd party site, verizon wouldn't allow me to carry my $5 messaging plan. the only options now are the $10 or unlimited, which is too much for me. i don't really text that much, just nice to have.
i can upgrade through verizon to keep the messaging but the site doesn't offer as good of a deal.

on a side note: can you use google voice to text non-google voice users?
or do both users have to have google voice for it to work, like whatsapp?

You can text everybody, they don't have to have Google voice.
