open messaging app (default) hit menu key>settings>received notification and uncheck box. This should stop the additional messages and the notifications in the bar. I use Handcent for my texts and I only get the Handcent notification. Hope this helps.

Well, I don't see any of the masters around at the moment, so I'll take a crack at your question...)
First, you can't uninstall the preinstalled apps, including the native messaging app.
However, to avoid getting double messages, go to the settings of the native app and disable all notifications of the naative app. This will NOT stop the native app from actually getting messages, but you will never know about it. And just leave the native app sitting in the app drawer. And remove it from all home screens.

And I gotta say, Wildman, Mort, and CRB have been wearing 'em out in the X forum.
That's who I didn't see around when I was responding to the OP...

You have a point there. However you too have a good bit of knowledge to impart on those who are just learning.
Happy New Year!

And I gotta say, you responded to someone's post about, I think, syncing with Exchange and your response had me thinking "you go, girl!". Exchange and its workings are something in life that I'm glad I haven't had to deal with.
Thanx and take care, G
