Incredible 8GB "Internal" memory and a 2GB SD Card?

All this time I've assumed the the "8GB" if internal memory was the SD card... so with all this rumble about this special limited time offer, we're getting a 2GB MicroSD card too???

So do all the Apps install to this 8GBs of "internal memory" now or we limited to the 576mb or whatever the Incredible has still?

We going to have an option to store on the SD card as opposed to the internal memory? If we use the SD card, that means we have 10GB of storage? We going to have 2 drive letters now when we mount the phone? One for the SD card, the other for the internal memory? Hopefully it'll be 1 drive letter with the SD and internal mounted as folders.

Not getting why HTC did on board memory as opposed to just using an SD card. Perhaps this is a precursor to Google moving away for apps on the RAM?

Anyhow, I'm just a bit confused as I haven't really seen any reviews or posts regarding this.

The reason why they are including a 2GB memory card is because of the applications you can download off the Android Marketplace. Most and I dare say all applications on the marketplace that store information seek the memory card to store the application information on it.

Basically putting it, the applications itself will be stored on the 512MB of ROM and not the internal storage. Though, for example in google maps when it downloads the maps it stores them on the memory card and most applications have no programming to store this data on internal memory. Lastly, most applications do not even recognize the internal storage.

Since the incredible does not have a memory card installed by default and has 8GB of internal storage then the application will freak out and most customers will freak out because they will say their phone is not working as intended! Which, in fact it is; but, if you do not have that memory card installed most applications will not work as intended.

From what I have gathered, the 8GB of internal storage can be used by music / video storage that being transfered from your computer, bought through the web, or taken from your camera.

I hope this explanation was helpfull.

@mad0maxx

Hey, thanks for the reply, but my question is more in depth then the normal "whats it for" question/response.

I actually know alot about these phones and I dabble in the development of Android applications. I'm thinking the 8GB of internal memory is suppose to behave the same way as if it were a standard 8GB SDcard. However, you may be on to something where some apps DO specifically look for the SDcard itself where HTC designed the internal memory to do this seamlessly without a SDcard. I dunno.

From what I've been reading, this 2GB SDcard is only for a "limited time". Maybe the limited time is only until the Incredible is patched to not need the SDcard.... hmmm......

There's a reason for the 2GB SDcard as Verizon wouldn't give it away for no reason.

If you don't mind I would like to shuffle this over to the Android Forum because you have raised an issue that needs clarification.  I will get back to you after I post this.  Or, of course you may already know about androidforum.com.  Now I need to find out too.

Go for it... I often go to that forum, but tend to post mostly here as I'm usually the "responder" not the questioner.. haha

Post back the link once you ask, thanks!

The internal memory works just fine; this has been verified in screenshots that I don't feel like looking up. The phone describes it as 6.6 GB so it seems the OS reserves about a gig and a half of it.

You cannot currently install applications to it, and so you are still limited to 576 MB, but Google says this will change in the future. And, of course, somebody may root the phone and figure out a way to put apps on the internal memory.

Oh and yes the SD card is included because some applications are hard-coded to save their data there. The Sense applications like the camera and music player are probably the only programs that currently know how to access the internal memory. Hopefully this will change as internal memory becomes more commonplace.

Call me skeptical but I think they put the 'Introductory Limited Time SD Card' thing on there because Engadget ripped on the phone for not having one.

How it'll work with actual apps, I'm not sure. But just to reiterate, SDCards are usually used for Music/Pics/Files for Apps.

Still courious on how it'll be handled when mounted... 2 drives or 1 drive with an 8GB folder or maybe 8GB drive with a 2gb folder...

How'd the device going to know where to store the app data crud if Verizon doesn't/didnt give us the 2GB card. I think it was suppose to all go to the 8GB internal memory, but Verizon/HTC found a bug with it at the last minute.

Summary: It is FAST, the display is BEAUTIFUL, and the ergonomics are EXCELLENT. I got the $199 deal since my 2-yr contract was renewing.

Mine did NOT come with a Micro-SD card, but has lots of internal memory, even after I downloaded 6 apps, including Google Maps"
